This is an oldie you’ve never seen before. It’s somewhat unusual on several points. It includes an “extra,” never the norm in A&J, and it features an early Janis being reflective, not reactive, on the subject of relationships. It seems I had several female readers tell me they liked this one at the time it appeared in newspapers. Also, the players obviously are having drinks. While regular readers know Arlo and Janis imbibe alcohol on occasion, I rarely set a scene in a bar. Even though I would not want to present them carousing irresponsibly, this isn’t just me. Bars, once a regular venue for comic-strip humor, became less so in the 1980’s. Even Andy Capp was pressured to sober up.
