Oct 14th 2008 Parents, get it in writing

I missed most of Sunday’s Paul Newman film festival on Turner Classic Movies, but I did tune in that evening for a good portion of one of my favorites, “Cool Hand Luke.” As good as the movie is, I was very familiar with the excellent acting and screenplay. However, I was struck anew by the cinematography, enough so I looked up the movie online and learned the man responsible was a giant in the field, Conrad L. Hall.

He won three Oscars in his long career, including a posthumous Oscar in 2003, for filming “The Road to Perdition,” the last movie in which Paul Newman appeared.

The same year he filmed “Cool Hand Luke,” 1967, Hall made another movie for which he would receive an Oscar nomination, “In Cold Blood.” If that film didn’t make a visual impression on you, you didn’t see it.
