The International Movie Data Base (imdb.com) credits Asta the wire-haired terrier with nine films, beginning with an uncredited bit part as “terrier at dog show” in the 1933 film The Kennel Murder Case. Asta (aka Skippy) went on to stardom as the scene-stealing canine companion of Nick and Nora Charles (William Powell and Myrna Loy) in a popular series of detective movies based on The Thin Man, a novel by Dashiell Hammet. The last of Asta’s nine films is said to be a Thin-Man television series that aired in 1958. Now, I don’t know about you, but I think it’s highly unlikely a 25-year-old wire-haired terrier could still hit his mark with any reliability.
