Autumn officially has arrived since we last mentioned the weather. It came in Saturday. Accordingly, the days have been gorgeous here, enough so that I have been coaxed into the yard, shovel in hand, for fall planting. Along with quotidian varietals azalea and hydrangea, I came home from the nursery with two Olea europaea. Olive trees. There aren’t many plants more historic or symbolic—or striking, to me—than an olive tree, and I’m excited. It’s going to be touch and go whether they survive in Zone 8, but I’m hoping to hear anecdotes from my readers about lavish olive groves planted within sight of the Canadian border. Anybody?
