Happy Veterans Day to the veterans out there. As I mentioned in the current A&J comic strip running in newspapers today, Veterans Day began as Armistice Day, the day a ceasefire was declared in 1918, effectively ending the hostilities of World War I. Many western nations besides the U.S. observe today as a day of remembrance based on that ceasefire agreement that took affect at 11 a.m. on the eleventh day of the eleventh month. It seems they just couldn’t stop themselves, even at the end of that wasteful conflict. Over 10,000 men were killed, wounded or went missing the morning of Nov. 11, before the fighting stopped. This even though it was widely known an agreement had been reached to stop fighting. Private Henry Gunter is recorded as the last American to die, shot at 10:59 a.m. that morning. It is fascinating if grim history, which you can read about here, where I read it.
