Today’s old, I mean “classic,” Arlo and Janis cartoon dates all the way back to March, 1993. I might have shown visitors this cartoon at arloandjanis.com in the early days; I honestly don’t remember. However, I can say you won’t see it anywhere else but arloandjanis.com, unless you have some really old newspapers around your house.

I don’t suppose it’ll ever make World’s Funniest Home Videos either.

Oh, to be young and crabby.

The Car Talk guys say it the other way around - “Classic. And by that we mean. . . Old.”

Well, here I am catching up after a few days absence again.

Bill in Paducah, that “Bohemian Rhapsody with Mnozil Brass” clip was great! (youtube.com/watch?v=hBLm747tyn0)
Note for new viewers regarding the 9:26 length - almost 3 minutes at the end is an ovation and follow-up patter that you can skip, especially if you don’t sprechen Deutsch.

I think I enjoyed that even more than the Muppets’ version at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgbNymZ7vqY (4:46 length).
An interesting thing about this one is it’s not an old Muppet Show clip, but a new production released about two months ago. Worth checking out for fans of the Muppets that would like to see if their new material compares favorably to the classic stuff.

Oops, now I see Sheila from the great white north already pointed out the Muppets’ version. Oh well, the suggestion is worth reiterating.

I see someone wrote praising the “PC world” we live in, attributing some positive changes to our lives to it. I personally attribute all those positive changes to the advent of the Mac.

Also, thanks to emeritus Minnesota biologist for pointing out The Gilbert and Sullivan Very Light Opera Company. Right here in Minneapolis, and I wasn’t aware of them.

The “humor” link at the top of their page might appeal to some folks here. ;)

Rather than pout that comments are down, just enjoy not having to do so much moderation. We’re still reading, but we’re too lethargic to post a witty response. In 1993, the internet was more of a curiosity than a standard communications tool and outlets such as YouTube had not even been envisioned (it is possible that those who dreamed up YouTube were still toddlers). Now, imagine if a much less mature Gene found Arlo’s ‘home movie’ and decided to upload it to YouTube…

    JJ-

Speaking of not finding old A&J cartoons anywhere else but in old newspapers around the house, what is the status of the new book? Lots of us are waiting with bated (and baited) breath, credit cards at the ready!

Just to let you know that we may not have commentted in a while does not mean we are not reading Arlo and Janis. It is cold here in Mass, where I live, at least we have our lights and heat. Winter will be here for some time, but we will be dreaming of the sand and surf as Janis is enjoying in the old story line.

  9. Michael on 03 Feb 2010 at 11:13 am #

That’s all well and good, but when are you going to post the sand crab part?

  10. CIDU Bill on 03 Feb 2010 at 11:25 am #

Michael, I think that’s going to be posted on the pay version of the site.

TruckerRon, your joke is very funny. I’d give Mac a try if they weren’t so expensive. I haven’t used one since college. My son just bought an Ipod Touch. That’s the first time we’ve had an Apple product in the house.

Regarding the other kind of PC, I think it’s a vast improvement. When we talk about the Good Old Days, we tend to remember only the positive things.

That reminds me, there was a recent discussion about free-range kids. That’s how I grew up too, but, now, when I see kids out on their own, the first thing I think is that they need adult supervision. Kids are nuts, especially boys. They don’t have good sense and they are generally thoughtless and inconsiderate of others unless constantly reminded that they are not the sole beings in the universe. I say this as the mother or two young teenage boys. It’s amazing how many of them manage to survive to adulthood.

As a classic visitor to the classic A&J website, I think that was
    posted before A&J V2.

I’d have to go through a bunch of old (should I say classic?) links I have to the A&J V1
    websites to be sure though.

about today’s I can’t jump on a table but I do pride myself in being able to kick my own butt. Jumping up and kicking both my heels into the bottom of my back at the same time, it’s important to stay limber as you get older.

  14. Claire on 03 Feb 2010 at 4:43 pm #

John: You just gave me a visual I’d forgotten from childhood - my dad pretending to give his shoes a quick shine by alternately kicking up his heels & rubbing each shoe on the back of his pants.

  15. Bob, near Mark on 03 Feb 2010 at 5:20 pm #

    John in Richmond Texas,
I could jump up like that, too. The problem wouldn’t be jumping up. It would be landing on my feet on the way down instead of flat on my face. My center of gravity isn’t what it used to be. :>)

Apparently, Janis was still upper-body-modesty-challenged a few years later; see 5-7-1999 in the archives. Well, as a friend of mine always says, “If you’ve got it, flaunt it.”

    Trapper Jean:

I believe you. I’ve heard creditable reports of feral emus in our area. Supposedly, some farmers attempted to raise them as a cash crop; it didn’t work out; and they turned them loose. Also becoming quite common around here are feral hogs, many being taken by deer hunters. Good eats, by the way. (The wild pigs, not the deer hunters. Some of the hunters would be too much trouble to clean.)

    debbie, ref the A&J convention:

I would suggest we all meet at JJ’s place for gumbo, but I’m afraid it might result in him (1) shutting down the blog, and (2) moving.

  17. debbie on 03 Feb 2010 at 6:27 pm #

Not if we each showed up with a big kettle/canner/soup pot full of gumbo of our own, but then again, you may be right……I wanta go to the convention….I’m thinking, find a boat show list first and work from that.

  18. Jim in SE Mississippi on 03 Feb 2010 at 6:59 pm #

    debbie:

    That’s a thought…a gumbo cook-off. And at a boat show fits.

You realize that based on the 1-31-10 vintage cartoon, yellow is the Official Color of the Official Sundress of the Official Sundress Competition of the Official A&J Convention. I’m just saying…

I hope your commute today was less hazardous than previously.

I spent the day on the beach today with my wife in Fort Lauderdale. She had on a Drew Brees Jersey and as we were on the beach, a reporter and photographer from the New Orleans Times Picayune stopped and interviewed us. They were surprised to see that we were from Michigan, but we told them that we were part of the Michigan contingent of the Who Dat nation and they had a good laugh.

Kind of cool to share vacation pictures with the family by just clicking on a link to the New Orleans paper. It was a beautiful day with temps in the 70’s, sunshine and a nice cool Brees to keep us refreshed.

Bob / Mpls: You’re welcome. We hope to be staying with a Mpls former student some weekend in March to take in “The Sorcerer”. It’s only the second G&S opera for which the music survives, and they hadn’t hit their stride yet, but it’s also one of the few we’ve not yet seen live.

Another source for G&S some summers is the Northern Light Opera Co. in Park Rapids: http://www.northernlightopera.org/ . They just did a Menotti opera in January, and their site does not yet indicate what their summer opera or musical will be. We’ve seen some pretty good G&S there: Ruddigore and Mickado.

    Steve from Royal Oak, MI,
Whoever captioned one of those newspaper photos doesn’t know his left from his right. :>)

(Actually, they just used the same caption for both photos… but they could have been more careful.)

    Ah, yes. Inadvertent public nudity.

Few amongst us have escaped it.

  23. debbie on 04 Feb 2010 at 6:08 am #

Jim in SEm: Travelling was easier yesterday.
We need to find a boat show taking place in the heat of the good ole summertime, hopefully near Mary in Ohio (I think she has the Blue Skyline Drive-In near her.) Bill in Paducah can handle the band….we need to find someone to make Ludwig stuffed animals for Wendy….and I am searching for sundresses (3 to 5) enough for a 3-5 day convention. This is like work. I will be packing my tazer but not where Janis keeps her cellphone.
