Today, I’m stretching all the way back to 1987, when the comic strip Arlo & Janis was less than two years old. (I call this period “the terrible twos,” based on the artwork.) As we shall see, Gene’s romantic entanglements have provided material almost from the beginning. As the “Twilight Zone” ripoff implies, this strip started it all. In 1987, I was working with much fresher memories of boyhood than I have now, but I still can remember the thrill of playground romance. As above, it often began with an agent provocateur whose motives were unclear. Then it went downhill.

I remember getting a phone call, from a girl who thought I was cute, but she used the name of another girl who had already moved onto the 7th grade (a different building). It was all very confusing!

I am amazed at how cartoonist’s artwork evolves over the years. I see something similar in my wife’s writing as it evolves too. A lesson learned is to go ahead and put yourself out there. If you wait until it is perfect, you will waste a lot of time.
Ah yes, elementary school. Where things were not always “elementary”. Usually, the boys and girls hung out separately, ignoring each other. But…. occasionally there were wild impromptu coed games of freeze tag during recess where the confusing (but exciting!) undercurrents of unmistakable mutual attraction bubbled to the surface. And then in a blink, it seemed to be gone. You wondered if you had imagined it. Until the next time, that is.

We successfully trained our 3 grandkids to call me Granddad, in contrast to the two Grandpas. No “greats” yet. Elaine was GramElaine.

Arlo looks positively pseudo-Bohemian in Panel #2, doesn’t he? Well, I guess a number of us did in the 1960s.

Ouch! I remember those with horror… and wearing the one my mother bought me. I think maybe she was trying to inspire me to leave home during my junior year of college. Which I did, come to think of it.

I’m jealous of that bass clarinet… it has extra keys to go down to a concert Bb, which would be useful for me. Mine goes only down to a Db. 🙁
