I’ve been looking through a lot of old comic strips lately, and I was struck by the large number that reference television shows or, in particular, television advertisements that happened to be running at the time the strip first appeared in newspapers. Of course, such material quickly becomes dated, and for that reason a lot of books about how to draw cartoons will tell aspiring cartoonists to avoid topical references. However, my philosophy is the opposite. I’m trying to produce the freshest, most amusing cartoon I can at the given moment, and if I know that cartoon won’t make sense years hence, I don’t worry about it.
Having said that, do you remember this campaign? I still do. Arlo pretty much says it all for me.
