There are two types of comic strip readers: those who love Jimmy Johnson’s “Arlo and Janis” and those who haven’t yet read the strip.
“Beaucoup Arlo and Janis” is the first collection of Arlo and Janis comic strips in over twenty years and features some of Johnson’s favorite strips. Just as rewarding, though, is Johnson’s recollection of his life and the influence it had on his work along with thoughts behind the evolution of “Aro and Janis”.
The book is beautiful and well-crafted. The hardcover and sewn binding will stand up to years of re-reading and is a bargain at twice the price.
If you have never read “Arlo and Janis”, this book is a terrific introduction to one of the gems of the comic page. If you are a regular reader, pick up “Beaucoup Arlo and Janis” and enjoy some of the great moments in the strip.

To prospective buyers of “Beaucoup Arlo & Janis”:
Everything “Blinky” says is spot-on! This is a wonderful, vast collection of one of the best comics out there – and in my opinion one of the best ever. The number of people who read the strip and say, “Wait, that’s me and my wife!” or, “That’s *my* cat!” or simply suggest (tongue in cheek, of course!) that Mr. Johnson must have been peeking into their windows before writing this or that strip, shows how many of us see ourselves in his work. But not just ourselves; our funnier, kookier, more romantic selves.
And for those of you who already know the above, I can only add:
What Mr. Johnson would obviously *never* state in the official description above is that he did all of the work – the comic selection, the layout, the text, the artwork (of course, silly!), the publishing… this book oozes with the detail and quality that can only come from someone putting their own heart and soul into a project like this. I assume that somebody else printed the pages and sewed the bindings, but I wouldn’t put it past him!
Buy this book – you’ll be awfully glad you did!
minnesotadon on 01 Dec 2011 at 6:08 am #
And I can’t say it any better than both Blinky and Matt have already said it. If you are on the fence about buying the book, go ahead and buy it and if you don’t like it I’ll buy it back from you…how’s that? Have a supergreatwonderfulfantasticmarvelous day.

There really isn’t any thing to say, if you like/love Arlo and Janis, then you have to buy the book. If you don’t know who they are and you are or have been single, married, a teenager, an adult, a cat lover, a dog lover, a cat hater, a dog hater, like sailing ships, have ever read a book, don’t read at all or somewhere in between, then you probably ought to give this book a try… oh, and did I mention, the book has pictures.

A wonderful look at the simple every day occurances of life – with many chuckles along the way. The book also includes an insightful introduction and two additional interludes to keep the reader up to date with the journey of the author – starting in 1985 and ending with 2010.

Don’t hesitate – get this book. Lovingly compiled as a labor of love by the artist, with loads of buckles, laughs and insight. Not only is the content outstanding, but it is a great hardcover book. Be sure to get it when you have some free time. You’ll need it . . .

I have been talking about Jimmy Johnson’s comic strip “Arlo and Janis” for years. One day I asked my brother if he “got”. “Yes”, he said, the newspaper doesn’t have Arlo and Janis, but no, he sometimes doesn’t “get” Arlo and Janis. Somehow his answer told me that he was a big fan of the strip.
Mr. Johnson has been accused of “peeking in our windows”. The everyday issues and observations that we deal with are drawn to not only draw a laugh, but also give the reader the satisfaction of saying “I’m glad that I’m not the only one”. However the strip’s humor is not always obvious, which allows the reader to have to think. Sometimes those strips are the funniest.
This book is a collection of what the creator feels is his best work (believe me, there are hundreds of other strips that could be part of a sequel) and is bound in a very professional binding. The author gives us a glimpse of who he is in the first few pages, but the book is about the strip, from its beginning, until it hit its stride to the current day.
I must give it 5+++ stars.

If you are reading reviews then you are probably on the fence about buying this book. The beauty of Arlo & Janis is that it has something for everyone. Through A&J, Jimmy Johnson is alternately introspective, silly, thought provoking and laugh-out-loud, spit out your coffee funny. He is always insightful. A&J is the kind of comic you cut out to put on your refrigerator. The book is well designed, the strip choices are well thought-out and the craftsmanship is excellent. You can not go wrong by adding this to your library.

I love the book. The only problem was my wife’s comment. When I told her I’d bought it, she jumped up with “So, now what am I going to get you for Christmas?”
It’s well laid out and very much Laugh Out Loud. Buy it.

My only question is “What took you so long to write it?” Thanks Jimmy for taking us along on the journey and I cannot wait for what’s to come! We do have a wedding coming up to read about.
Like others have said, just get the book, sit back, laugh and enjoy the journey!!
Thanks again Jimmy

What the world has been waiting for. The ultimate collection of observations of the world and every day life with insight and humor. The book is well constructed both literally and figuratively. Jimmy Johnson has an eye for both the sublime and the ridiculous. Whether Arlo is tangling with the cat or Janis is taking on their son Gene, humor abounds. This is a great read and a great keepsake.
Thank you Mr. Johnson for making getting through the day with a smile much easier.

Everything that they have said before and MORE! The book is stellar, the art refreshing and the best part is you can identify with almost any of the strips, that of course is because JJ has been observing us for years some how and has come out with the most Symply Fargone strip imaginable……You need this book! BTW when is the Luddy book due?

As a long time Arlo & Janis fan I jumped at the chance to buy this book. I expected it to be a wonderful collection but was pleasantly surprised on how much more was there. The layout is fantastic, the recollections are fun to read and the quality is top of the line.
There are many fun discoveries along the way as well – it took me a little bit to connect Rodan’s “The Kiss” with the front cover graphic – my mother is a huge Rodan fan and we had that sculpture in our living room when I was growing up. It seemed just another bit that connected me and the strip, as many people find themselves connected.
It has been fun finding the older strips the bring back fond memories. I shared this collection with my daughter, who is also a fan, and she loved reading all the strips that she never got to see.
If you buy nothing else this year, buy this book. Jimmy has done such a great job putting this together it is worth twice what you will pay but the value will be many times greater.

There’s not a lot I could say that hasn’t already been said better and more eloquently said by others, so I’ll just say “you should buy this book”! The quality of the book itself is worth the price alone, and the strip choices will keep you enthralled and reading for hours, whether you go from page to page in order or just thumb through at random.
I will say though, Jimmy Johnson has been peeking in my windows for a lot longer than I had thought, but that’s okay. It’s worth it to see how he translates what he sees into Arlo & Janis!

I have devoured this book since receiving it. Between getting to see strips I’d either never seen or haven’t for a very long time as well as Jimmy’s own discussion interwoven into the book it has been a complete enjoyment. Highly reccomended to any fan of A&J or even of comics in general. The slice of life that is A&J seems to come from the slice closest to home.

I hate to be the first to write anything negative about the book but I feel I must warn others before they even think of opening this, I must admit, delightful book. In all seriousness, do not sit down in the evening with the thought that you’ll read a couple of pages and then go to bed. I lost at least an hour and a half of much needed sleep last night before I could force myself to put the damned thing down.

For years I have been clipping Arloa and Janis strips and keeping them in a Whitman’s Sampler Box. How wonderful to now have so many in a book! This is a must have for a fan of the strip and an opportunity for those of you yet to become fans. It won’t take but a few pages for you to “sign up” and join the fan club! Love me some Arlo and Janis.

Allow me to say you will not be disappointed with this book in any way. The biography and other insights on the background of the strip are fantastic! But the comic strips really show the progression and maturity of Jimmy’s ability as an artist, and are coupled with clear character development and wonderful longterm storylines, all as they have all progressed through the years, which makes this a book worthy of any coffee table or bookshelf!!

I received my book last week, and have already finished it. I was happy to find most of my favorite A&J strips in there. It was my Christmas present to myself. Not only did I enjoy it very much, it took the pressure off of my wife on what to buy me for Christmas.

“Arlo & Janis” has been my daily dose of real-life humor for more than twenty years. Jimmy Johnson is a keen observer of the human condition and, in a few panels, he manages to capture our foibles as well as our dreams. Now, in one beautiful book, he has assembled some of the best of his strips. My fervent hope is that this is just ‘Volume 1′.
Don’t borrow this book. Buy it. You’re going to want to have it handy to show friends, to share with a loved one, or just to delve into when you need a laugh.

I have followed Arlo and Janis for years and it is my favorite strip. I have it emailed to me every day so I don’t miss it if I’m not able to read the paper.
As soon as JJ hinted that “The Book” would be available, I jumped at the chance to order it.
I was not disappointed when I received it. Jimmy did an excellent job on the entire book. His introduction regarding his early life and that of his parents is especially interesting.
If you are on the fence about purchasing this book, then take a leap of faith. You’ll be glad you did! Can’t wait for the next one to come out. Just hope we don’t have to wait 20 years for the next one! (Jimmy, are you listening?)

I ordered a copy for my husband’s upcoming birthday on the 12th & haven’t gotten a chace to read it all while he wasn’t around to see it, but I scanned thru the entire book. It’s organized very well! I had forgotten that it was going to be hardback so when it came in I was thrilled to see the quality of the binder even. Arlo & Janis is one of the great treasures of the comics world, as far as I’m concerned; I got the original (Bop ’til You Drop) book when it came out, and have been getting the comic by email since I found it was possible (late nineties?) “Beaucoup Arlo & Janis” has been a great treat for me — I’m still pacing myself and haven’t *quite* gobbled the whole thing, but every page leaves me with a great big grin. I’m hoping this will be the first in a line of such books (I for one would love a complete retrospective!)

Okay, I have a confession to make. I have not yet read all of “Beaucoup Arlo and Janis.” But I have an explanation: I enjoyed the first few pages so much that I don’t want it to end. So I am reading a few pages at a time and relishing each story. My wife and I love Mr Johnson’s Arlo and Janis because we can relate to the characters so well. We are grateful!

Let me start by stating bluntly that I am not an impartial reviewer. I have been following Arlo and Janis in the newspaper for as long as I can remember, and I’ve purchased two of Mr. Johnson’s original artwork strips from E-bay (both of them featuring Luddie). Whether you’re a long time fan who understands “Ludwig’s gots ears!” or new to the comic, I highly recommend the book. It’s a fine collection that had me laughing out loud more than once. Especially memorable are the Gene and Mary Lou stories. You will never see frost on anything the same way again! (Buy the book and you’ll know what I mean).
Here’s to good reading!
Cheers,

I became a fan in the early 90s when I moved to Pensacola, and was appalled to find after another move that the Shreveport paper doesn’t care much for comic strips aimed at adults. Fortunately, the A&J web site and comics.com allowed me to continue with my addiction. This marvelous book contains a high percentage of favorites, but it looks like we’ll have to wait for the next book to see some of the great ones left out (like Gene and the Tae Kwan Do bully series). The somewhat crude drawings in the earliest strips quickly morphed into some of the finest line drawings imaginable, presenting the full range of emotions with unerring accuracy – dialog in many strips was absent because it wasn’t needed in that instance. On the other hand, I know of no other strip that blends sharp wit with outrageous slapstick, subtle double-entendre with ribaldry, and thoughtful commentary with such skill. Buy the book. I’ve just ordered two more for Christmas presents to discerning friends.

I came to know Arlo and Janis a bit later in their evolution, but it is one of my very favorites. I missed out on the first book. I was not going to miss this one. The quality, as others have stated, is FAR, FAR better than many more expensive collections…and the added autobiographical material is a bonus. Many others here have said it better, but it is so true:
If you already read A&J, get the book, you won’t regret it. If you do not already read A&J, get the book. You won’t regret it.

Do your mind and soul a simple favor — buy this book, read it, digest it, LAUGH OUT LOUD! It’s theraputic recommended by 4 out of 5 doctors and Better H & G [Howls and Giggles]. And buy a copy for a friend and another for someone who will soon be your friend. You can do nothing better this holiday season. Also, for those of us who are in the unfortunate position of having local newspapers that do not carry the strip — and they wonder why sales are slipping so rapidly — this, and Jimmy’s site, have been one of the few ports of sanity and humor in an otherwise bleak universe. Just kidding about the bleak universe thing but I needed to put in that sailing reference somewhere.

I only recently discovered A & J so all the old ones are new to me.
Impressions of the book in no particular order:
I was surprised at how saucy (spicy?) (not gonna say “naughty” althoug soem woyuld say I should) the strip sometimes is. (Nowhere in that sentence is the anything resembling a complaint==I found it delightful.)
It is pretty clear that there are a lot of other dates I wish I had seen.
The book does not take rationing well. If you don’t have time to read it all, don’t start it.
Don’t read it you need to display a somber mien.

I have been reading Arlo and Janis since i was in high school in the mid 80′s. It has been my favorite comic ever since. At first my favorites were the ones about the beach and boats, but I soon came to love all of the characters in Arlo and Janis. The comics page is the first place I go when I open the paper every morning and has been for a quarter of a century. I owe this love to Arlo and Janis. I have been looking for a book for many long years. It was worth the wait. It is even better since I know that the artist did 100% of the work. Thanks for all the years of laughs and thanks, finally, for this beautiful book.

Wunderbar! Maravilloso! Merveilleux! Geweldig! Your hard work putting together this collection of your hard work is certainly worth the wait, Jimmy. There is one series of strips in particular you have included that I appreciate very much. Thank you!

I just bought your book. Normally I wouldn’t spend this much on a single book but I’m making an exception for you for multiple reasons. Your comic is a rarity these days – funny (usually) and insightful in a way that resonates with me. I also feel like I know you personally through what you share on your blog. That last bit makes me want to support your publishing efforts. In this age of meme and sound bite and momentary center stage flash, it feels important enough to me to support artists of substance (that would be you). I hope sales are through the roof and one day we can share some shrimp and beer and talk about all those silly memes.

Here’s the one sour note you’ll find on this page.
Oh…. not that there is anything wrong with the book, but rather that mine sits wrapped, under the Christmas tree and I sit like an eight year old waiting for Christmas morning.

A&J has been one of my favorites since I first stumbled across it 20 years ago. I’ve had to subscribe online to read it ever since the idjut features editor at the local paper cut it out. Johnson’s collection is a wonderful intro to the strip for anyone new to it, and a nice memory refresher for current fans.

I’m afraid I’m not posting a link to this on Facebook … yet … because this is what we bought for every married couple on our Christmas list! I was happy to pay this price for a collection of Arlo & Janis strips even before I had realized that it was a hardback. The books were delivered in good time and I’m thrilled with them. Thanks very much!

I got it!!!! GOT IT!!! Went for lunch and found it waiting for me!!!! Now have to stop reading it and get back to work. Such a lovely cover. And signed.. Clever Mr. Johnson. Black pen. Almost started complaining that it’s not signed.

I had to get the book because I’ve enjoyed “Arlo & Janis” for many, many years. I read the entire first section of strips before I went back to read the background bits. Then I read the entire book cover-to-cover in one sitting. My family is now allowed to read it, and they are enjoying it as much as I. We have a few comic collections in the house, but this is by far my favorite. A&J is well written, well crafted, and tickles my funny-bone like no other strip. The book is just a slice of what is best about the comic. Makes you hungry for more.

I love Arlo & Janis and this book captures some of the best from over the years! As a fellow Alabamian who was raised in a religious tradition that is very literal, I find Jimmy Johnson’s humor to be so spot-on that I often wonder where he’s hidden then cameras in my house because I know that I’ve had many of those same conversations that Arlo and Janis have on a regular basis. He captures the universally quirky bits of relationships and makes them shine. I love it and can’t wait for the next collection!

Love, love, love the book. It is a Christmas present for my husband and I know his socks will be knocked off by it! Had no trouble finding the autograph and, if it’s any consolation, your is more legible than is mine.

I’ve been a faithful fan for years and never knew there was so much before I started reading it. I am loving catching up and reviewing.
A very special brand of humor. Insightful, put together with tender care, genuinely funny with a right-on edge. It has a diverse, adult appeal. My mother and I seldom see eye-to-eye on what’s funny in the popular media, but on this gem we do.
I am giving Mom one for Christmas, plotting this since Jimmy posted it was coming. She’s not much of a webbie so she doesn’t even know this exists. Can’t wait.
Get one for yourself and someone you care about.

A delightful comic for romantics – incredibly funny and tender. My husband and I don’t belong to Arlo and Janis’s generation or cultural background, but Jimmy Johnson’s insights into love and relationships apply anyway. Over the years, I’ve lost count of the comics we’ve smiled over together because it almost feels like it’s us immortalised in his panels.
This book is absolutely, 100% worth a purchase!

A gem among comic strips, Arlo and Janis combines excellent artwork, and real life humor. When so many strips today are stick figures, Mr. Johnson’s skill at expressing emotion and movement stand out. Mr. Johnson’s personal stories of his life and the business of the strip add a warm connection between artist and reader. With over 900 dailies, it works out to more than one for every two weeks; the perfect retrospective for the fan and a great introduction for those unfamiliar with it. Like many strips it underwent character design changes in the early years, but Mr. Johnson’s particular insightful humor of the loving growing evolving relationship between Arlo, Janis and their son, (with occasional forays into fantasy, allegory and breaking the fourth wall) remain constant and so true to life and real to so many followers. If you’re a fan, what are you waiting for? If you like comic strips but are unfamiliar with Arlo and Janis, you will find a new favorite. If you or a friend aren’t into comic strips or don’t understand people who are, this book will explain it.

(I posted this by mistake on the blog for 12.27.11 because I had forgotten about this section.)
Jimmy:
Per my wishes, my wife hid my copy of “Beaucoup Arlo & Janis” and gave it to me on Christmas.
Of course, even though I read it slowly so that I could savor each page, I finished it on Christmas Evening.
I know that you are most likely sick of glowing praise, but that’s too bad. It’s great, and I wish you much success with it.
Only one line with which I disagree, the one in which you indicated that perhaps the strip is not what it was during the transformative years. You’re the artist. I’m only a hack who comments once in a while on your blog. You know your strip better than I do.
Still, from my perspective, “A&J” continues to improve each year.
I hope that you had a great Christmas, one that will help keep a glimmer of the feeling alive during the rest of the year.

I have been sharing selected strips with my lovely wife to significant ancillary benefits, if you get my drift. She rewarded me with an autographed copy of the book. The book is a treat as well as her hand written note thanking me for sharing. Thanks JJ….Slainte !!

If you are looking for suggestions for your next book how about doing some different stuff about Arlo and Janis that is more on the adult intertainment side—more risque if you know what I mean. But don’t get yourself into trouble. Carlo, MI

I just ordered the A&J book so I can share with family. We have always kept cats in our family and this comic strip is always a joy. Watching Luddi, Arlo, Janis, and Gene are a favorite thing for our household. Thanks Jimmy!

25 years times 365 days equals 9,125 comics. So where do I get the 8000 that aren’t in the book? I want the comprehensive! In exchange, I’ll send you my ex-wife’s 8-book hardback set of early Peanuts compendiums. 1950s and 1960s.
