It will soon be that time of year. This old A&J from 2008 reminds me of a much older joke. President Harry Truman was lecturing White House reporters on the intricacies of rose gardening and extolling the importance of manure. A squeamish Presidential Press Secretary approached First Lady Bess Truman and suggested, “Perhaps you could suggest to the President that ‘fertilizer’ might be a more delicate word than ‘manure.'” Bess replied, “Do you know how long it took me to get him to say, ‘manure?'” Yeah, you’ve heard that one.

We havent heard from emb since Saturday. I posted a link to that dvd he wanted. Hope he’s all right.
emb’s about as good as can be expected. Looks like he may end up having to buy a DVD. Really would like to have that full performance.
Process of elimination suggests “political crap” refers to mentioning the coincidence of Lincoln’s and Darwin’s birthdays. Lincoln was perhaps our greatest POTUS, and a Republican. I am not one.
Have no info / Darwin’s politics, but understand he was anti-slavery. “Whig or Tory / I don’t know / But into Parliament . . .” Sorry, sidetracked to perhaps the best of G&S, “Iolanthe”, which ridicules both Whigs and Tories. Perhaps ref. Lincoln offended some Village Confederates? That Abe was a liberator of humankind [though his effectiveness was blunted by one J.W. Booth] seems beyond political controversy, unless there are Village Confederates who would disagree.
As to Darwin’s role as liberator, he provided theologs with the chance to get back to their basic role as Trucker [I think] suggested it, but too few saw the opportunity. Actually, C.D. was, sadly trapped in a theological mainstream issue, the theodicy problem, “How can a good God allow bad things to happen?” when his innocent daughter died of a fever or whatever. So he became less religious.
Anyway, some can be so sensitive that almost anything one posts here can be misread. So, I’m “all right” but discouraged.
Later?
Thanks & peace,
Typos: “Perhaps ref. to Lincoln …” and “Actually, C.D. was, sadly, trapped in … .”
Early on, church got mired in doctrinal disputes, and eventually became obsessed with them, and with worldly power. As Marion’s BUMC banner says, “Doctrine divides, service unites.”
Peace, I think.
1st day jury duty done. Didn’t get picked, didn’t get rejected. Just sat in the assembly room from 830 to 430, and back tomorrow. Had a painful experience after arriving in the parking lot. As I was walking to the courthouse I failed to see a low curb and fell straight forward onto a flat concrete drive. Ruined a brand new pair of pants, skinned both knees, and my left shoulder is quite sore. Good thing is i’m still walking and talking, and was wearing a very heavy army-type field coat which helped my chest area.
Cheer up, emb — “non carborundum … ” I’ve forgotten the rest. I bet some of you can remember the rest of the motto.
Mark in TTown: I pulled the same stunt at night in a Flying J’s parking lot while carrying my dirty laundry in. The laundry bag cushioned my arms and chest, but I also tore the knees on my work pants.
emb: I may have upset someone by accusing presidents of both parties of using boringly common cuss words. I’m sure Mark Twain would have considered them uninspired.
“Political crap” was an allusion to one poster’s mildly politically statement and to what Arlo is carrying.
Getting up for work after a later than usual evening “telescoping” is harder than I thought it’d be. π
But the views were worth it! π
And this afternoon, if it’s not too cloudy, I’ll go for some photos of the current sunspot.
