A pithy comic strip about life, love, lust and puthy cats.

Extra, Extra!

Belly Button

By Jimmy Johnson

This is an old one, a classic from 1997! The mid-90s were a transformative time for Arlo & Janis. The early A&J had a subtlety and wit that allowed it to survive, but it was a rather one-dimensional family strip that wasn’t always very well drawn. In the mid-90s, exaggeration and whimsy began to find their way into my writing, and I began to learn to draw. The strip rather quickly morphed into something much more like today’s Arlo & Janis. This divide, to me, is so pronounced that it seems as if Arlo & Janis actually began about that time. Plus, it helps me forget I’ve been drawing this strip since cars had running boards.

Today's "Arlo & Janis!"

Hmm, I see this strip as a candidate for page one of “Arlo and Janis After Dark”.

Considering the height of many sport utility vehicles, it’s time for running boards to return as a standard feature.

If not those, a retractable ladder.

My ’58 and ’67 VW Beetles had running boards. Just how short would you have to be to need them?

I’m old, and I have had running boards added to the last 3 minivans I have bought. I like to think the next person with small kids who buys those used vehicles appreciate the addition.

Watching the Michigan State-Iowa women’s basketball game. They just showed the pep band, which today is made up of alumni. Not the first time we’ve seen that during student holidays. One year there was a guy in a tux – it was New Year’s Eve, so he probably had another gig later.

Ghost and I have retractable running boards on True Grit. I had running boards on last two previous trucks. They should be standard on all pickups and SUVS.

In college I had a 1931 Chevrolet touring car with running boards. We hung on side in parades like the Untouchables. Loved that car.

Anout retro strip, I have huge storage bins full of things ordered from catalogs but never worn. It seems unlikely I ever will but Ghost says there must be needy born again young women I can corrupt?

Woah! I’m really digging the template/theme of this website.
It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s hard
to get that “perfect balance” between usability and visual
appeal. I must say you’ve done a superb job with this.
Also, the blog loads super fast for me on Safari.
    Exceptional Blog!
