This was one of my few conscious efforts to push my drawing along. I was experimenting during this series of cartoons, trying to make Arlo and Janis look better. It didn’t take. Visually, my cartoon is what it is, strengths and weaknesses alike. Partly, I attribute this to having never been a compulsive doodler as so many of my cartooning colleagues are. I’ve been with other cartoonists who wouldn’t leave a restaurant or bar as long as there was a blank napkin left in the house. Not me. Basically, I am not a visual artist. I use drawing to facilitate whatever it is I do, but I’m not going to cut off my ear if things don’t look quite right. And partly, it’s laziness.
