OK,
this one got me in trouble with a few readers. Some
people wrote to accuse me of racial insensitivity for
the Charlie Chan gibberish. Of course, in the strip, the
young man misunderstands Arlo and takes offense himself,
lapsing into sarcastic dialect and embarrassing both
Arlo and Janis as they understand his misunderstanding.
This kind of humor is very tricky, especially in
newspaper comics where a few complaints can go a long
way. In all fairness, there weren't many letters. |
