Mar 28th 2012 07:07 am Habitual offender

Well, I know how to get your attention. Mention leftovers! I’m continuing today with leftovers from 1989. Today’s retro cartoon is an example of the “insecure Janis” theme that was woven heavily into the strip at that time. And the current strip for today is about naked ladies, so be sure to check it out.
The next book-related appearance will be Tuesday evening in Mobile, Alabama, original capital of French Louisiana. One of the oldest cities in the United States, Mobile was named for the Mobilian Indians who lived there at the time of French settlement. All residents today refer to themselves as “Mobiliians.”

I checked it out before I came here, Jimmy, and now I’m being picked on because I said I wanted to get some “Pink Naked Ladies.” I can’t win even when it comes to gardening!
Steve from Royal Oak, MI on 28 Mar 2012 at 7:56 am #
Either mention leftovers or ask Mindy to post something. I think half of them were about “pulling a Mindy”
As for me, I have been told by my kids that I have a cornucopia of useless information. I think a few on this blog share this distinction as well.

The pink naked ladies are truly lovely sandcastler! You should buy some yourself! Don’t forget the fried egg episode[s], Steve!

Looking forward to seeing you on Tuesday! Hope it is a big turnout!

Mobile is also home to the oldest Mardi Gras celebration in the United States!

“Mobile On the Beautiful Bay” as Maria Ball sings it. Saw her at the old Saenger Theater in downtown Mobile. It was great night. Welcome to Mobile, Jimmy!!

Jimmy, one of my favorite comedic movies of recent years was “RED.” The female lead, I can’t remember her name although she was good, referred to “Mo-bul.” That was the onliest time in my life I’ve heard it as anything other than “Mo-beel!” I used to journey there at every opportunity, which wasn’t nearly enough, because I loved that city. The two greatest cities in the South, and I deliberately leave New Orleans out, are Mobile and Charleston.

See you next week. Bring an ice chest, I’m bringing you some ribs.

Steve from Royal Oak, MI, “a cornucopia of useless information”….. I resemble that remark!
The current discussion makes me second guess my interpretation of the lyrics of the Who’s “Going Mobile”.
As for Mo-bul vs Mo-beel, I’ll throw in Mo-bEYEl.
Seriously, Mo-bul, to me, is a gas station — Mobil.
Mo-beel, to me, is a city in the state of Alabama.
Mo-bEYEl, to me, means able to move around, which is what the song I referenced is about.
“watch the police and the tax man miss me, I’m mobile!”

John in Virginia, I believe you’re referring to Mary-Louise Parker whose character is kidnapped by Bruce Willis’. However, I’m at an age where I found Helen Mirren’s character to be just as interesting… and I’d want her on my team if she can really shoot that well! BTW, that age is between the two lovely ladies who are about 20 years apart.

Lord love a duck, TurckerRon! I guess I’m of the same age also since I truly love Helen Mirren’s work! She did a great TV series for the BBC, “Prime Suspect.”

Re: “naked ladies” – If Arlo and Janis was ever to be made into a television series, I’d have to cast a vote for using the band Barenaked Ladies for the theme song (Yes, I know Jimmy Buffett’s gonna get more votes here). They’re the fellas who do the “Big Bang Theory” TV theme, and even have a comic strip connection, since their hit song “It’s All Been Done” was used as the opening of the animated series “Baby Blues”.
Has the question “Who would play Arlo & Janis in live-action?” ever come up here before?

Mindy, would rather that they have a nice all over bronze :-V
John in Virginia on 28 Mar 2012 at 11:33 am #
Casting for an A&J movie would be like casting for “Catch-22″ back in the Sixties! The ONLY one I got right was Bob Newhart as Major Major Major Major.
Mindy on 28 Mar 2012 at 11:38 am #
Over-all bronze is tedious, sandcastler! There should be at least one, for lack of another word, “firebreak” on the property. All farm country people know that!
John in Virginia? Where are the Snowdons of yesteryear?

This was the song we learned when we were children!
MOBILE
(R. Wells / D. Holt)
Julius La Rosa
They saw a swallow building his nest
I guess they figured he knew best
So they built a town around him
And the called it Mobile
Where’s that?
Alabama
They took a swampland heavy with steam
They added people with a dream
And that dream became a heaven
By the name of Mobile
Pretty soon the town had grown
Till they had a slide trombone
And a man who played piano
And a swallow who sang soprano
No use you’re wondring where you should go
It’s on the Gulf of Mexico
Where the southern bells are ringing
And the climate’s ideal
It’s a honeysuckle heaven
By the name of Mobile
Where’s that?
Alabama
Pretty soon the town had grown
Till they had a slide trombone
And a man who played piano
And a swallow who sang soprano
No use you’re wondring where you should go
It’s on the Gulf of Mexico
Where the southern bells are ringing
And the climate’s ideal
It’s a honeysuckle heaven
By the name of Mobile

Firebreak, that has a certain hint of mystery that the sandcastler likes. Thank you Mindy for broadening my views.

Catch-22 casting? Heck, I only have an hour to spare right now, so I’ll go with Bob Newhart.
Once, on the Carson show, Bob said that when he was younger, people mistook him for Henry Fonda.
Now, to the Joseph Heller novel: The Major Major Major Major character was said to resemble Henry Fonda.
Back to Bob in the moive: In the extended take in Major Major’s office (with Norman Fell as Sgt. Townsend), keep one eye on whose portraits are on the wall in the background.
My standard refrain: If you liked the movie (I’m aware that not everyone did), please read the book (if you haven’t already, many times).
Okay, I lied – the Old Italian Man was also the croupier in Casablanca.
John in Virginia on 28 Mar 2012 at 4:47 pm #
CW, Catch-22 has been an almost annual thing since I was much, much, to many muches younger. I read it first in college because it was almost forced down my throat by an instructor. It was funny. I read it again my first year in the Navy. That’s when I began to understand it and appreciate the sarcasm. Or subtlety. Since then, it’s become a regular, although, I admit, I’ve slacked off a bit in past years. It took me nearly ten years to understand how Milo could sell the eggs for less and make a profit, duh. I especially love the court martial bit.

Jimmy – thanks for the link on the Mobilian Indians. I fear that my knowledge of history of the southern states is somewhat lacking. Up to now, my interest has been mostly in the Ohio Valley and Appalachia. I see that I need to broaden my historical interest horizons.
Re today’s strip and Pink Naked Ladies… I had heard of the flower but did not realize it was part of the Amaryllis family. Hmmmm… Amaryllis Belladonna… these naked ladies sound dangerous! Be careful, Mindy! LOL
When I was reading about Amaryllis Belladonna, a memory surfaced. Remember little Ronnie Howard in “The Music Man”? He was sweet on Amaryllis and, having a lisp, had trouble with the name. Gee – I would love to see that movie again!

Today’s (3/29) strip is perfect. It captures the intensity of spring gardeners exactly. Right now I’m angry because rain yesterday kept me from transplanting tomato plants and planting green beans and butternut squash. Still wet today, too. Would be great weather if the seeds were already in the ground, though.
