A pithy comic strip about life, love, lust and puthy cats.

Extra, Extra!

“Ignorance is no excuse”

By Jimmy Johnson

Speaking of the old days of cathode-ray monitors and dial-up modems, remember when you’d get dire messages similar to the above? Today, things are much better. Microsoft now relies heavily on much more civilized phrases such as, “Please wait.” And speaking of digital things I don’t understand, time is running out on the WordPress version that underlies this Web site. Remember when it disappeared entirely a few months ago? Chad, a nice young Earthlink employee with an odd accent, helped me get back online but told me I’d have to bring my software up to date by the end of the year or even he might not be able to help me. Well, I’m about to start monkeying with things, so if this site disappears altogether some day soon, try not to panic. Keep checking back, and, as the great Houdini said about life hereafter, “If I can possibly come back, I will.”

Ahhh…the old “Blue Screen of Death” Memories-sometimes not so great!

Now the frightening messages are all pop-ups from scammers trying to get you to pay for them to break into your system.

Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain?

Or as Groucho said in Duck Soup:
    Rufus T. Firefly:
Clear? Huh. Why a four-year-old child could understand this report.

    Rufus T. Firefly:
Run out and find me a four-year-old child, I can’t make head or tail of it.

That cartoon must be really old; I can’t remember when I last used a program that came with a hard-copy manual.

Dear Jimmy, It may be time to call professional help — maybe even before trying it on your own. If I were tackling this, I’d be tempted to have an expert come to my house.

I like Jimmy’s use of color in this too.

Sideburns: In 1995 I used Interleaf (publishing software running on UNIX) while working on a contract at Oracle. That’s the last one I remember having/needing a manual. On my next job I used FrameMaker which was much easier to use and went to a online help system.

Interesting art, Mark, but it looks as if Janis has gained a bunch of ballast below the waterline.

If you ever need to use a page layout or DTP program again, TruckerRon, take a look at Scribus. It runs on Windows, Mac and Linux with a good online manual and a mailing list for more help. It’s a professional-quality program and best of all, it’s free.

You’re using WordPress 3.2.1? That was released in July of 2011. Ouch.

A bit off topic, but I never got a response on this and a quick search of comments did not give me results I was looking for – Did Jimmy ever send out “After Dark” for those of us that contributed to the fundraiser? I moved and sent my new address to him, but never received anything…. I’m under the assumption that it never went out.

Sean Cz – I haven’t received it either. I’m under the assumption that it’s still being worked on. I’m sure it’s worth the wait.
