I read somewhere (qualification being easier than documentation) that for only the second time in the history of collegiate and professional sports, different teams from the same state have risen to their respective championship for four years in a row. I’m talking, of course, about the University of Alabama’s three football championships in the past four years and the odd one that went to cross-state rival Auburn University, my alma mater. Supposedly, the only other time something like this has happened was when the Giants and the Dodgers still were playing baseball in New York, and the Yankees would let one of them win the World Series occasionally. I didn’t say it was a big deal, but it’s interesting, if true. Besides, if Alabama fans are waiting for congratulations from me, that’s as close as they’ll get.

Seems to me the NY Yankees won five straight World Series in the 50s. Guess I will have to look it up and see if I still have small parts of my memory intact.
Robb on 08 Jan 2013 at 8:24 am #
Actually after review, the Yankees won 5 in a row 49,50,51,52,53 and the New York Giants won in 54. So the state and the city of New York won six years running.
Robb on 08 Jan 2013 at 8:34 am #
Actually the Yankees also won in 36,37,38, and 39 so it has happened twice in baseball. Never has happened in football but in collegehoops UCLA won 7 in a row 1967-73 so that is the most.

Thank you Jimmy. I take your comments in the spirit in which they were written. You are a classy guy. We should all just be proud to keep the Crystal Football “in the family” (or state), but then again its and Auburn/Alabama thang.

Texas A&M ended up number 5.

Well, that’s much classier than many of my AU friends.

At least hang on the SEC loyalties.

The funniest moment from the game last night (and for this ND rooter, the only pleasurable moment) was hearing how Alabama now has another crystal football champion’s trophy to replace the one someone dropped and shattered last year.

I am a big football fan, so last night I watched the Food Network. Dislike anything to do with nd and Nick Saban. I did flip it when the game started to get out of hand. I just had to forget that it was Alabama, but watching nd get embarrassed was great fun. Bringing up sports will almost get you in as much trouble as politics and religion, so it you disagree with my post, simply ignore it!

I tuned in at 6:30 Mountain time and kept waiting for the game to start, but it never did, so I went to Netflix.

Oh, was there a game last night? All I saw was a clinic. Sheesh. Even my Longhorns could have been ND.
Boise Ed on 08 Jan 2013 at 11:11 am #
Arrgghh. Correction: … could have beaten ND.

actually last night was not a sports game it was a sacrifice to the football gods … but I had predicted it would be that one sided, ask my office mates…yes I did gloat!

Mindy, might you prefer sex in the stadium? Certain you have ASFAD that would titillate GR6.
More to your liking?
ANNETTE on 08 Jan 2013 at 2:03 pm #
Please let’s not bring up the Longhorns….or their coach. I congratulate Alabama. Amazing accomplishment.
Mindy on 08 Jan 2013 at 2:53 pm #
Actually, sandcastler, I rather enjoy the sports blog from time to time.
As for ASFAD, well, I’ll never tell.

[Involving the old, pre-Super Dome Tulane Stadium...] Or not.
sandcastler on 08 Jan 2013 at 3:13 pm #
Ah Mindy, you kindle the imagination with your hints at mischievous past adventures. Explains why John treats you royally and GR6 lingers on your words.
I am still elated that Texas A&M finished a respectful #5. After all the trash talk they under went for switching to the SEC.
Ghost Rider 6 on 08 Jan 2013 at 3:30 pm #
Perhaps the problem was the football gods were expecting a sacrifice of virgin cheerleaders.
Yeah, yeah, I know; that’s stereotyping. But sometimes I just throw things out there to see what happens.
On which yard line, Mindy?
sandcastler on 08 Jan 2013 at 3:36 pm #
GR6, it may have been an end-zone play.
As to the cheerleader comment, I defer so that I might continue to post in the village square.

Robb -and the Dodgers won in ’55, their only win in Brooklyn, the Yankees again in ’56 (Larsen’s perfect game!) before the Milwaukee Braves finally broke in in 1957.

Sandcastler, you know what they say about those of Texas A&M: You can always tell an Aggie. You just can’t tell him very much. And, Ghost, it was at Home Plate, of course. Or is that Home Base? Whatever, it was dark…Oh! The fertile imaginations!

Is it coincidence that Jimmy has titled today’s offering as…never mind.

Won’t “back field in motion” cause one to be penilized? Wait a minute, is that spelled right?

Mindy, I was just going to say that JJ seems to have thought up the above title to that particulat strip after John said he was jerking my chain. Sorry folks, but I didn’t say it, John did. BTW, what’s up with Dilbert? He gets nine squares including one whole square just for the name of the strip. I’m about to begin a book on crop circles. Maybe I’ll understand that.
Ginger on 08 Jan 2013 at 6:11 pm #
Mindy goes out at night in the mists and fogs and makes crop circles. I don’t see how she does it, flying on her broom in all that low visibility stuff. (She said it first; I’m just quoting her!) Personally, I had fifty riding on Notre Dame to beat Alabama at 4 to 1. Fortunately, my bookie got busted so I don’t have to pay off since all the betting slips were trashed.
I want to leave you fellow Villagers with one thought: John Wayne.
Ghost Rider 6 on 08 Jan 2013 at 6:43 pm #
Hum. Sort of makes one wonder if someone might have dropped a dime on the bookie around halftime, does it not? (Do they say “drop a quarter on” now?)
I have a hilarious joke about riding a broomstick, but it would be the last one I’d ever be able to tell here.

All plumbing problems should be as simple as mine today — replaced the flapper, hooked up the new chain, done!
OTOH, I had the remnants of a broken tooth yanked, that wasn’t so simple and is starting to hurt now.

Ignoring the football talk–Ginger and Ghost, “Life is tough; it’s tougher if you’re stupid.”

Ghost, in New Orleans it was, and, perhaps, still is, “drop a nickel” due to the fact that the NOLA area was the last in the nation, in the mid-70s, to increase the rate of public telephone calls to a dime from five cents. I was but a tyke then, of course, but…
Jean, someone I held in the highest esteem once said that if it weren’t for stupid we’d have a terrible time finding politicians. I always felt that it meant finding the voters to elect the politicians, but I’m just sayin’…

Re: the “Big Game” – Being from Indiana, my Facebook page was full of pro-ND junk; I am a NASCAR fan and follow many in that community – which meant my Twitter feed was pro-’Bama. I watched Antiques Roadshow, then went to bed. It was rather fun to watch the reactions as the tides turned (no pun intended).
Russell Way Out There on 09 Jan 2013 at 4:57 am #
Mindy from Indy, I avoid the Antiques Roadshow like the plague and political & theological discussions. The last time I watched it one of the antiques was a lady I used to date in Knoxville. They never did appraise her. I did, but, being a gentleman, I’ll not make my evaluation public. (I’m sure she would appraise me in the same manner.)

I’m for LSU. I’m not talking to any of you!
Mindy on 09 Jan 2013 at 7:07 am #
Margaret, I’m for LSU second or third. Tulane is first, Loyola is second, assuming they finally got a football team which I doubt, and then LSU. Followed, of course, by the University of Virginia which will never win a Bowl unless it’s presented to them by the Tidy Man. Do NOT put VPI on my list of ups ever! Oh, and I forgot, I’m pro Navy.
Ghost Rider 6 on 09 Jan 2013 at 7:56 am #
Mindy, Loyola (“Wolf Pack”) has baseball, men and women’s basketball, women’s volleyball, women’s golf, men and women’s tennis, and men and women’s track, but no football team. Guess which one I like best?

I had thought most of the land-grant schools had “A&M” in their names. Today, I got to wondering about VPI. According to Wikpedia, both VPI and Auburn are land-grant schools. Colloquially, “Moo U” was the first land-grant school, originally funded by state lands. The federal act, signed by Mr. Lincoln, was based on the state act.
