Jun 26th 2012 08:12 am Makeup test

I spoke to a great audience in Auburn yesterday at lunchtime, members of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Auburn University. OLLI is a public continuing education program that is open to everyone but tends to attract people who are, well… our age. It was standing room only, and they were very kind to me, often laughing at remarks that I hadn’t intended to be funny. That’s the kind of audience a humorist wants. Being a graduate of Auburn University, I considered them a hometown audience, and in my experience they can be the hardest. I want to please so badly that I can tense up and fail to deliver my best. The OLLI people wouldn’t let me tense up. It was fun.

Uh, oh… I just realized I can’t find your speaking schedule online, and you’ve got an event scheduled here (Boston). Trouble is that I’m going to be out of town for 2 1/2 weeks fairly soon. I can still jiggle my schedule a bit, but I have to know when you’ll be here.
Dave in MA on 26 Jun 2012 at 9:17 am #
In Boston? I wasn’t aware of that! When?
I also commented that his appearance schedule had disappeared, but my comments appeared (no pun intended) to go unnoticed…..
John in Virginia on 26 Jun 2012 at 9:57 am #
Jimmy, your “our age” comment started me thinking, which is less dangerous with me than it is with Mindy, but…I wonder about the demographics of this blog. Who in here is under fifty? Forty? Thirty? Idle curiosity.

Boston! I’ll come! (If we can figure out the date etc)
Burns on 26 Jun 2012 at 10:03 am #
Fa. Tried to google it and all I got was that football coach guy.

John in Virginia,
In answer to your question, in my case, none of the above. You could add another decade and the answer would still be, “Not me.”
Hoag in MA on 26 Jun 2012 at 10:37 am #
Age? John, What’s in a number? I like to think I’m rather young if I divide by dog years. At least my Newfie tells me so.
Dave in MA on 26 Jun 2012 at 10:38 am #
I’m in my mid 40s. But I’ve been here before, so that may explain a few things.
John in Virginia on 26 Jun 2012 at 11:29 am #
Apparently there is a good diversity! Jimmy’s audience is nicely varied. Why am I not surprised?
dAVE. on 26 Jun 2012 at 11:51 am #
I, for one, have seen the better side of 50 a while ago.
I like Hoag in MA’s suggestion of dividing by dog years. In that case I am always acting my age . . . . at least according to my wife.
MWL on 26 Jun 2012 at 1:42 pm #
If I want to see any of those decades I need to use a mirror. The good thing is they actually are closer than they appear!
Beth in MA on 26 Jun 2012 at 1:43 pm #
Jimmy’s coming to BOSTON? WHEN? I want to see and hear Jimmy. Please not while I’m visiting Oregon. First visit to that part of the country for my hubby and me.
Dave in MA on 26 Jun 2012 at 1:52 pm #
MY luck, Jimmy’s visit to Boston will be the 3 days in July I can’t make it because I’ll be in Vermont!
Where’s the schedule details??????
Neal in Bahstawn on 26 Jun 2012 at 2:09 pm #
Jimmy, you have a riot brewing here: I see people straining at the glass and someone just got their hand stomped on. A lady in the back just shrieked and no one will let anyone else through. Is there now something scheduled for Boston?
Laura in Az. on 26 Jun 2012 at 2:17 pm #
De-lurking to say that I’m in my early(ish) 30′s. And I’ve been reading A&J for years.
Dave in Seattle on 26 Jun 2012 at 2:49 pm #
About the only time I have regreted living in Seattle….I wonder when Jimmy will make it out this far….To the cold dark and wet part of the country. (At least today:).

82, in people years, even older > cx-p.

I prefer to think of my age in hexadecimal. That means I’m in my mid-thirties.
W C McPherson on 26 Jun 2012 at 3:24 pm #
I was at that OLLI meeting yesterday and I really enjoyed Jimmy’s presentation. Jimmy, thank you for a very informative and entertaining presentation. Our summer sessions have grown over the last few years and speakers like Jimmy have been the cause. Our next meeting will be July 9 with Jennifer Lolley from the Forest Ecology Preserve.
Beth in MA on 26 Jun 2012 at 3:55 pm #
Dave in MA: how did you find out the 3 days Jimmy will be in Boston?
Dan in SWMo on 26 Jun 2012 at 4:00 pm #
Early 60s here. That is only part of the story, however, because my parents were in their mid-to-late 30s when I was born, and, I feel, the age of one’s parents contributes to one’s own interests and attitudes.
Bob, near Mark on 26 Jun 2012 at 4:02 pm #
W C McP,
That upcoming July 9th meeting sound like it may be quite poetic.
Lolley speaks to OLLI on Forest Ecol’y?

I mentioned a few days ago when I mentioned dialysis, which is going well. I am 50.

54 this year.
Galliglo in Ohio on 26 Jun 2012 at 7:05 pm #
Well, I am a couple years older than Mary (also in Ohio)… does it count that I feel at least 20 years younger? Usually…

I’m not up to arithmetic. Old enough to know better, too young to care.
H in MA: Is your first name “Jonathan,” by chance?
Jim from NC on 26 Jun 2012 at 7:57 pm #
63 and lost 20 pounds since March 2nd. Working on 20 more for my goal. Walking over 5 miles a day and eating salads and soup.
Jim from NC on 26 Jun 2012 at 7:58 pm #
And vegatables and fruit. Hope to be able to be bad at golf for a long time and enjoy Arlo and Janis after that.
Galliglo in Ohio on 26 Jun 2012 at 8:21 pm #
Congratulations, Jim from NC! Keep up the good work.
Steve from Royal Oak, MI on 26 Jun 2012 at 8:30 pm #
I turned 55.5 last Friday, but going on 15, somedays 12. I tell people younger than me that I may be older than them, I make up for it with immaturity.
Mark in TTown on 26 Jun 2012 at 8:33 pm #
57 and counting. If measuring in animal equivalent, I would prefer cat years, whatever that may be. Unlike a cat, though, I don’t spend most of my day sleeping. And I can sympathize with Arlo and Ludwig both in yesterday’s retro strip!
TruckerRon on 26 Jun 2012 at 8:33 pm #
I recently passed 3A years (hexadecimal).

Put another check in the early sixties column.
I don’t think it applies in this case, but I do agree with Dan in SWMo about the influence of your parents’ age. Mine were in their early forties when I was born; I have friends whose moms were born the year my folks married.
NK in AZ on 26 Jun 2012 at 10:44 pm #
Turned 70 this year. I agree with Steve in Royal Oak; the way I put it is that I don’t mind growing older, since I intend never to grow up.
John in Virginia on 27 Jun 2012 at 1:00 am #
As Mindy would say, “I was so much older then, I’m younger than that now.”
I wonder how many heads that old song line will reverberate in for the next couple of days/weeks/months?
sideburns on 27 Jun 2012 at 1:25 am #
Early sixties, here, although most people think I look younger.
phil in Missoula, MT on 27 Jun 2012 at 7:55 am #
Perilously close to 62 here.
John in VA…Bob Dylan is playing in Missoula here at the Big Sky Brewery in late July. He probably could have sold out the university field house…but I think he wanted an intimate setting. Pearl Jam is playing here too and they did sell out the field house in 15 minutes and probably could have done the stadium in 30.

Here’s another one for the mid 60′s column … my husband likewise although I tell everybody that he’s like living with a 10 year old – ’nuff said
Dave in MA on 27 Jun 2012 at 8:00 am #
Beth in MA, I didn’t find out anything. I was simply stating that with my luck, that’s when it will be.
John in Virginia, thanks for sticking that in my head. Got the Byrds stuck in my head (don’t care for Dylan’s version)….
David in Austin on 27 Jun 2012 at 8:56 am #
Don’t know how I came through as anonymous…. that’s me up there at 50.
Susan KT on 27 Jun 2012 at 11:09 am #
Just like Steve from Royal Oak, I turned 55.5 this month. I also tend to be immature for my years. I expect a seamless transition to second childhood in a few years.
Dan in SWMo on 27 Jun 2012 at 3:38 pm #
I don’t know whether they have them all over the country, but my “Growing up is optional” T-shirt that my baby sister gave me for Christmas was bought at a certain chain discount store with initials W.M.
