Jul 15th 2011 07:15 am Migrating headaches V
As the sun sinks slowly in the west, our friends leave the beach with today’s classic A&J and return home. No, they didn’t pull up stakes and move. These little conversations seldom have a meaty denouement, but I’d argue that makes them more, not less, realistic. I don’t have a lot of time today, so I’m going to bid you a relaxing and enjoyable weekend. Please come back Monday!

I agree w/JJ that it makes them more realistic. Our “beach” is the mountains of Equador, where a couple can live very well in a gorgeous home with hired help on one person’s social security check. It never gets super cold or super hot (mid 60′s to high 70′s year round) & the mountain scenery is gorgeous. Also, NO Mosquitos! What a change that would be from Louisiana.
My husband is tired of running from hurricanes…, but I’m more scared of running from lava flow is one of the volcanos should decide to become active.

For lava repellant send me $19.95 plus S & H and I’ll send you a prayer booklet.

Re: Today’s strip. There are a lot of people here that don’t understand UK golf courses. They have pretty much remained as they have always been, not the sculpted and manicured courses we have here in the U.S. I think that is why some American golfers have trouble with them.

On the retro strip, I think that anyone who has ever been to a beach, dreams someday of moving there. We had a place on the Texas Gulf Coast for awhile, and I will say, we had some great times there.

One of the joys of a secure marriage is being able to float these ideas out there and share dreams without having to fear for the consequences. Even if only 1% of the ideas become real, it is still fun to play “what if…”
Karen in Btown on 15 Jul 2011 at 10:58 am #
I agree with NDK. The wonderful thing about marriage is that you can dream out loud even if nothing ever comes of the dreams.
JJ- my husband and I have been huge fans of yours even before marriage. Your relationship humor is everyman style. Any average couple could just replace the names. We have our share of A&J clippings all over our house. That said, you print that book, and we’ll have a copy in our living room to laugh over with friends!

Thanks for remembering “The Open Championship” in todays strip. My favorite tournament, even though I have to be up at 3 am to watch !!

I’ve been enjoying your beach strips, JJ, but unable to comment. I was in the hospital for almost exactly three days from late Monday afternoon to late Thursday afternoon. No pain, no discomfort, just that it wasn’t safe for me to be “out and about” because my platelet count was down from 150 to 12 and any injury would be Very Dangerous for me. (This is the second time this has happened, but I’m not that surprised; after 50, there’s a 60% chance that it’s chronic.)
We’ve lived withing about five miles of the Pacific for the last five years, but until recently I’ve never even thought about the beach; don’t know why, just haven’t. Maybe I’ll go down and enjoy the water this year.

Regarding yesterday’s Bastille Day strip:
When Bastille Day falls on a Sunday, will we get to see, in the extra panels, what happens next? I guess, being a Sunday, A&J wouldn’t be late for work, but they might get a late start on whatever else they had planned.

billinbossier, not everyone. I’m in a mixed marriage: my wife loves the ocean, and I love the mountains.

Hope you are better now. Definitely get down to the water–it cures what ails ya. Well, at least, it calms the soul.

I sympathize with Arlo in this week’s retro strips. I used to dream of moving to the Lake of the Ozarks and its 1,100 miles of shoreline. The lake is about a two hour drive from where we live.
Whenever we went there I would spend the whole trip home trying to think of a way to make a living at the lake. The only things I could come up with were: 1.) Open a rock shop (as if the Ozarks needed more rocks); or 2.) Make and sell straw hillbilly hats.
Sounds pretty silly, doesn’t it? But sometimes you just gotta dream.

I’d give credit except I can’t remember who here said a couple of years ago that Joan Collins was the British Open. That tickled me for some reason.

Yeah, the Bastille Day cartoon was a “laugh out loud” one! For me it was one of those where I read the punch line, pause a beat, and if I’d been drinking anything it would have been all over the monitor!
Rick in Shermantown,
The Four Reasons was relatively empty between 11:30 and 12 today!
I hadn’t planned to make it up that way today, but had a telephone system to troubleshoot and was able to time it just right for lunch. Had one of their turkey sandwiches. I do envy you having it within walking distance for lunch.
Have a great weekend, everyone!

So far, so good. I have another two-hour infusion coming up at 8 AM on Wednesday, and with luck, it will do some long-term good.
phil in missoula, MT on 16 Jul 2011 at 8:37 am #
Sideburns, I wish you well and hope the infusion gets you up to snuff.
You should eat more of those little plates in your diet ;>}
Seriously folks, you should consider donating platelets for people in similar straits. Blood banks have come a long way in the aphoresis business and it is relatively painless. The needles are much smaller than they used to be and the process is faster. I used to be able to watch most of a movie while they extracted the platelets but now it’s done in about 60 minutes. Usually they have juice and cookies afterward, which was the big draw for me. And you’ll feel good about yourself, knowing that you’ve helped someone you’ll never know.

I am not allowed to give blood (too much time in Europe during the Mad Cow days). Do they reject platelet donors for the same reason?
sideburns on 16 Jul 2011 at 11:55 am #
The first time this popped up, Phil, I was given several units of platelets. Since then, I’ve tried to get enough B 12 in my diet, as it’s important to platelet production. As luck would have it, I’m very fond of the best source there is: one serving of beef liver gives you 780% (not a typo) of the RDA along with all that iron. For those of you who might be concerned, but don’t like liver (Chicken livers are also good, but not quite as concentrated.) shellfish, especially clams or oysters are also good, and cheese is a fairly good source.

Sideburns:
Hope that you are feeling better. I so hope that I never have that issue as (as stated before in this blog) I do not like livers and have a severe allergy to shellfish. I saw the chart and eat enough eggs and occasional cheeseburger to help keep me healthy.
phil in missoula, MT on 16 Jul 2011 at 2:50 pm #
Robin, yes they reject donors of all blood products for that reason and a host of other things including taking aspirin products on a regular basis, babiosis, chagas Disease, some transplants and just plain anemia. They are particularly careful about moving disease from donor to recipient.
Mary in Ohio on 16 Jul 2011 at 3:27 pm #
Isn’t molasses good for raising blood iron levels? Probably nowhere near as effective as liver, but you can’t stir liver into your coffee either!
curmudgeonly ex-professor on 16 Jul 2011 at 5:05 pm #
Oh, Mary!! I don’t like coffee and I really dislike liver, so the mental image you just conjured up really got to me….yeccch!
sideburns on 16 Jul 2011 at 6:21 pm #
Yes Mary, molasses is a good source of iron, but not of B 12, and that’s what I need to watch. (I don’t think I was deficient in it, but while the steroids are pushing the production up, it’s probably a good idea to make sure I have the needed ingredients.)
Steve, for most people, a normal well-balanced diet is all you need, but keep up the good work and remember that steaks, chops and roasts are also great sources.

I am on vacation one more day (Sunday, that is), and then it’s back to complying. We were somewhere in Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Ohio yesterday, and I was unable to go to Four Reasons. Starting Monday, I will be back to my usual lunch time, and you’re right: Being that close to Four Reasons is extremely convenient. It’s a two-minute walk.

How about taking little liver pills? I would say that was a joke but I have no idea what they are. I used to donate, but they wouldn’t want any blood products from me for just about every reason that they have. I was told by my gp a couple of months ago that I was wasting my money taking a multi-vitamin. All that I needed to take was blah-blah. I followed his advice and began feeling more blah than I ever had, not to mention that I was sleeping about 20 hours a day. I went back to taking Centrum silver several days ago and I feel a thousand per cent better. I’m not promoting the brand. Any store brand would probably work as well, but my wife doesn’t like store brand med’s, including vitamins. “It’s just not the same.”

Bob:
Reminds me of Beecham’s Pills, which were big in the UK when I was stationed there in ’52-’53. Sir Thomas Beecham, Bart., originator and conductor of the Royal Philharmonic, was the well-off grandson of the Thomas Beecham who originated the pills. At the Royal Festival Hall on the south bank of the Thames, Beecham was one of the least energetic conductors I’ve ever seen. Actually had an upholstered bench at the back of the podium to lean back on. Didn’t seem to hurt performance any. Beecham’s Pills were discontinued in ’98.
