Feb 9th 2012 06:55 am Morning glory

I don’t want the Web site to become all about this, but I don’t have a lot of time this morning, so I might as well mention the following. I will be at Lemuria Books in Jackson, Mississippi, this Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m. Also—and this is new—I will be in Memphis Saturday, Feb. 25, signing books at The Booksellers at Laurelwood, also beginning at 1 p.m. For those of you familiar with Memphis, this is the former Davis-Kidd Booksellers on Perkins Extended. I hope those of you who can will come see me.

Galligo, I too miss Memphis. Lived there for a time and it still is home in my heart.

Are you guys stuck inside of Mobile?

The Food Network says the three best barbeque places in the country are in Memphis. They’re Corky’s, The Interstate and The Rendezvous. I would love to get back to Memphis and try all three!
billinbossier on 09 Feb 2012 at 8:24 am #
Nobby, evidently the Food Network has never been to Bodacious Barbeque in Liberty City, TX.

Germantown Commonsary on Germantown Road south of Popular is the best in Memphis BBQ, IMHO.
BG in Memphis on 09 Feb 2012 at 8:38 am #
I lived in Texas for 10 years and moved to Memphis 3 years ago. The BBQ here is by far better, no comparison.

The best was at a little place in Algiers [New Orleans] on the West Bank of the Mississippi, but I can’t remember the name and I don’t know if it survived Katrina. BBQ and Blues…and anything but Dixie or Jax!
Mark from Maine on 09 Feb 2012 at 9:19 am #
Did I forget to mention, to mention Memphis?
(That one’s for all you LBZ fans who are also fans of Talking Heads . . .)

Hey Jimmy, how about signing books at the Jimmy Buffett concert in Birmingham later this month? My wife and I are going there for our first Jimmy Buffett concert. Anyone else going to see Jimmy Buffett?

Shucks! I live 90 minutes away and won’t be able to go. I have to work on Saturday.

I guess those of us out on the left coast will have to be content with our already signed books. (sigh).

“Now the last thing I wanted was to get in a fight, in Jackson, Mississippi on a Saturday night. Especially when there was three of them, and only one of me.” haha… avoid the Dew Drop Inn. ; )

@Mark from Maine,
I had posted this a few weeks back(credit to Dave Loggin’s w/slight edits “xxx” by me):
Please come to Boston for the spring time.
I’m stayin’ “near” with some friends
And they’ve got lots of room.
You can sell your “originals” on the sidewalk
JJ Do let us know when you’ll be up north…it is not so cold. Today I am in Woodstock(Bryant Pond), Maine and it is beautiful! I am Symply Fargone.
Mark from Maine on 09 Feb 2012 at 10:53 am #
You ARE Symply Fargone! You have to be – you are only 70 miles away!
Today is a picture-postcard day in Maine, for sure. Crisp sun, beautiful blue sky, no wind and high 30s forecast. Time to strap on the snowshoes . . .
From Natchez to Mobile, from Memphis to St. Joe . . .

A cavil: the ‘old’ format showed the number of posts for each entry, which I used to decide whether to revisit the entry. Might the counts be added to the new format?

That was my thought too, Lindy.

“I don’t want the website to become all about this…”
Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy… tsk, tsk, tsk…
The whole POINT of a website is for shameless self-promotion! Fish gotta swim, birds gotta fly, cartoonists gotta eat! (And hopefully, if they promote themselves enough, then cartoonists will fly into the beautiful San Francisco Airport, see the sights, and then drive across the Bay Bridge and down I-580 about 30 miles to any of several local bookstores!)
OK, in all seriousness, we love all of your commentary, and I’ll bet everyone who lives in / near a city that you’ll be visiting thinks they’ve hit the local jackpot!
(Oh, and once you’ve visited my turf, drive back north, continue on 101 north and visit some of the largest trees in the world, some of which you can drive THROUGH; eventually, you’ll land in Eureka, a beautiful town, and can say Hi to Lindy from Eureka, CA)

OMG, I can totally relate to this old strip. LMAO.

A clarification of my cavil: ‘twould be nice to see the counts on the ‘recent’ list; they do show up on the individual pages.

BG, I’m sorry you never got to have the ribs at County Line, on FM 2222 in Austin.

Michael:
Wife and I went to a June professional meeting at Humboldt State U., a vertical campus in Arcata, just around the bay from Eureka, in the early ’80s. After the meetings, a shuttle bus took us to the airport. As we exited, our student guide said, “As you leave, turn your watches ahead 20 years.” The campus then had a very much ’60s ambience. Delightful place, and yes, Eureka is about as picturesque as they come.

For an adopted Texan, having eaten County Line ribs and Rudy’s, I will still have to say the best ribs I have ever eaten were at Bob’s BBQ, in Ada Oklahoma. I’ve eaten Memphis, St. Louis, Kansas City, and all over Texas and Arkansas–but Bob’s was the single best barbeque of any.

David, never had the Carolina ribs?

Remember the Decorah eagles of last year (& currently)? Well, last year I also enjoyed watching a sextet of li’l’ barn owls grow up in San Diego. It was another ustream site. I just now found that place again and can report that mother is sitting on 3 eggs, all laid Fe 7 – Fe 9, so they are really new. Perhaps more are on the way, given that she had 6 last year….
Google “barn owls” “San Diego” “2011″ and click on the hit with the names of Mel & Sydney. Then place it in your favorites list for daily checking.
I found it endearing when those fuzz balls rotated their heads more than 90 degrees while looking at the camera.
curmudgeonly ex-professor on 09 Feb 2012 at 7:04 pm #
Slight correction for those keeping score: those owl eggs were laid Fe 5, Fe 7, and Fe 9.

Leigh’s barbeque in Future City, KY. Don’t bother looking for a website. And get there before noon (11:30 some days) if you want a side of potato salad.

Here is the link for the live hummingbird cam in California. http://phoebeallens.com/
In the Birmingham area, Bob Sykes used to be the best. I don’t know about it now as I haven’t eaten there in years. Original owner’s son is running it now. Same family since the 1950′s so they must be doing something right.
Mark in TTown on 09 Feb 2012 at 9:33 pm #
Best barbeque, that is. It always helps when I remember to finish my post before posting it.

Hey, I disagree with what Morning Glory is implying.
Everybody knows men wake up as good looking as when they went to bed. Women, on the other hand, seem deteriorate during the night. heh heh
