It's hard to exaggerate how ubiquitous the "western" was on television and at the movies a generation ago. Most of the scripts and scenarios were absurd, too. I suppose that's worth remembering when we're tempted to rail against the dreck that's out there today. (OK, so it was a little more than a generation ago.)
