Back on Scenic drive. These old oaks stood at Memorial Park, between Scenic Drive and Highway 90, to the left. It was possible to park in their shade and eat lunch while looking out on the gulf. For the most part, the coast's trademark live oaks fared well. They're tough. Live oaks don't become this stately in areas ravaged regularly by the sea. The area has drawn some lousy cards in its history, but much of the Mississippi Coast isn't uniquely vulnerable to hurricanes.
