I bought several American films on DVD from a bookstore in Europe. Included was the option of watching the movie in one of several languages. Cool! When I got home, though, I discovered my CD's would not play on my equipment here, because I wasn't in the right "zone." I suppose this has something to do with combating piracy. I understand that theft of intellectual property is serious, but I do not see how it's foiled by charging me full price for an item then rendering it useless.
