I’m sorry I missed yesterday; I was under the weather. Continuing the exhibition of old Sundays, most of which haven’t been seen by readers for two decades or more, here is another example of a theme that was common in Arlo & Janis for years after the strip began. It’s no secret I was married to syndicated columnist Rheta Grimsley Johnson during the early years. Rheta, indeed, suffered from a lot of personal insecurity that provided this fodder, only slightly exagerated. I will say this: Rheta understood the creative process through her own writing, and she never once took exception to my interpretations of married life. In fact, I think she, better than anyone, could see herself and laugh. Perhaps these early comics were even constructive. I don’t know. We remain very good friends today.
