Feb 3rd 2012 08:06 am You can’t say it enough

You haven’t even noticed, have you? You might remember, comments from new posters here went into a moderation queue to be reviewed by yours truly. This mostly was to prevent spam from making its way to the board, although I must say that the WordPress plug-in “Askimet” does an admirable job on its own. I rarely had to weed out spam myself, and I don’t think I ever censored a poster’s comments for content. Therefore, a couple of months ago at least, I stopped most moderation. There still are exceptions: certain words and more than one link within a post. The former rarely is a problem, but the latter does trip up a well-meaning poster now and then. I will go into the controls one of these days and see if I can’t up the number of allowable links. Meanwhile, keep up the good work!

This is work? Jimmy! This is the bright spot of the day!

Hmmmmm, well, since those of us who periodically post wouldn’t be moderated, and those new posters wouldn’t know that you used to moderate, how would we have noticed?

Our Parrothead Club has a guestbook. Every day I get 6 or more posts there. Almost every post is Spam. I’m glad it hasn’t hit here.
PS
Buy Timeshares in Argentina now!

I found a web page to an Antarctic society for us ex-Navy types in Operation Deep Freeze, went there and found a long lost friend. That was four years ago. I still average 125-150 spam messages per week, everything from the Nigerian National Lottery [plus that little banker guy who needs help getting the billions out of the country, please send bank accout & routing numbers], eager Russian mail-order brides, Viagra and assorted products and about 25% in Arabic which I don’t understand except for a few spoken naughty words & phrases. I’m glad I found my friend after so many years but I surely wish I could have done it without venturing into spam city. To the best of my knowledge, JJ, I haven’t picked up the first spammie or trojan, worm, spyware or virus here. Basically, it seems that the people who check in here are all non-trouble makers. Weird, maybe, but not trouble makers. I’d say this site is more fun than a barrel full of monkeys, one of my Dad’s phrases, but I could never see the humor in that. It must be fun, I keep coming back and giggling.

I forgot to mention the spam for feminine hygiene products. Now it’s mentioned.

Please! Let’s control ourselves.
Remember, it’s the little things that count.

My spam has me clearing international bank accounts and handling shipments of cargo. May explain why my accounts are always overdrawn.

Jimmy, for what it’s worth, I have a set-up similar to yours and I find that allowing up to two links and using the “moderate first-time commenters only” setting is a perfect balance: I’ve had zero spam get through, and very few comments incorrectly held for moderation.

John in Podunk,
Who is PS, and why are you trying to get him to buy timeshares in Argentina?
I had a timeshare on Block Island, RI, many years ago. It was a little tight with three kids along, but it was worth the cost. (The cost was $0.00. A friend gave it to me! I only had to pay for the fare on the ferry and for food. Wish I had more friends like that.)

Ok, I’m up to date on the comments and I don’t know if my comment is still in moderation. Thanks for the info JJ about the links. Is there anything else that you can suggest to keep us out of moderation?

Hummingbirds. This guy. Mitochondria. Electrons.
That’s 4. Oh, you didn’t say count little things. :-/

Kathleen: As a person who periodically posts, I was still moderated for using two URLs in one post.

Bob, near Mark, I don’t know who PS is but I was “offered” a “special deal” on a timeshare on/in/at Rock Island, Illinois. Had serious questions about that since Rock Island, Illinois, which is really an island, is also occupied completely by the U. S. Rock Island Arsenal. Imagine, an arsenal and a timeshare…what an explosive combination!

To my fellow cohorts on A&J… you brighten my day. And since I have been working 10 hour days doing income tax returns, my days (or rather evenings) need brightening! Thanks…

John in Virginia,
You should have gone. You might have had a blast.

A friend of mine pointed out something very true about spam: Have you ever noticed that spammers keep offering to restore your love life, but they never bother to ask if you’d backed it up?

Anyone else having trouble with their comics this Saturday a.m.? Comics Kingdom seems to have died…

John in Virginia: Please visit quadcities.com/# (I have no idea how to imbed a link)
Mary in Ohio on 04 Feb 2012 at 4:15 pm #
Trucker Ron – Up until about 2 weeks ago I had a Comics Kingdom account that would give ,e the half dozen or so comics I chose every day. Then all I got from the same bookmark was their home page, so I had to bookmark each comic and view them individually. Is that the kind of trouble you mean?
TruckerRon on 04 Feb 2012 at 6:04 pm #
Mary in Ohio, for several hours I was unable to access the comics I get through the Seattle PI site, which uses Comic Kingdom, to get my usual daily dose. Nor was I able to reach them through ComicsKingdom.com itself. Finally things came back up correctly about noon my time.
Like you, their reconstruction of their site messed things up for a few weeks, but I’m now getting a page of up to 4 strips at a time… which means it takes a bit of time, but not too much to get them. If I try do get more than one page at a time, they all load the same strips.

If you remember to do it, look for Jim Cordle at center tomorrow for the Giants.
He graduated from the public high school here and played with the Buckeyes, as well earning his degree.
Watching the Super Bowl will be even more enjoyable this year.

@Rick I will be watching. I wonder what team JJ likes this evening?
Rick in Shermantown, Ohio on 05 Feb 2012 at 8:51 am #
Redman:
In regard to JJ and based on today’s strip, my only guess is that his preferred team is the one that loses.

John in Virginia;
Regarding spam, I have done two things that seem to have cut down on the spam. One was to sign up for a free hotmail account (could have been google or yahoo). Whenever I suspect that someone wants my email to sell, I give them that one. I go in once a week and clean it out to keep Microsoft’s disk useage down. On that account, I get 1 valid email for 10-15 spam. In a week, I’ll get 150 pieces of garbage and Hotmail is pretty good at sorting out the junk into the junk folder. At this late date, you may need to get yourself a new email address and keep the old one to catch the spam.
The other thing I have done is to download Spybot (which is also free, although they would like a donation which I do annually, because I think they do good work). Spybot prevents spyware from loading on your machine which will report back to some central location about what sites you are looking at. Some are malicious and capture keystrokes. I also have Norton virus protection which blocks most things, but I find that they don’t get everything.
