We haven’t had any really good Little Gene humor for a long time. This one is from 1991. I’m reluctant to keep bringing this sort of thing up, but I’m learning here, too. I was talking last week to those of you who view Arlo & Janis on GoComics.com, the Andrews McMeel Universal web site. We talked about how to “like” a particular strip, if you were so inclined. (The response, by the way, was quite amazing! Thank you!) I have noticed, though, that another metric important to the GoComics people is the “favorite.” That’s the blue icon to the right of each day’s cartoon that looks like a pushpin. The whole idea of the “favorite” is vague to me. It doesn’t mean that A&J is your favorite comic strip or even that a particular strip is your favorite strip of the moment. What “favorite” allows you to do is save a cartoon, as if you’re cutting out a “favorite” cartoon and sticking it on a bulletin board, hence the pushpin. The vague part of it to me is, why would you want to do that? I suppose so you easily could find it again or show it to someone later or just have it cluttering up your device. Maybe you really like the cartoon that much! You can find more information about this on GoComics.com. Anyway (sigh) it apparently will help me if you take an additional two seconds to click on the “favorite” icon. But only if you really want to do it! I have less pride than last week, but I still have a little.

Of course you are our favorite. Who else? I just read where Sparky Shultz’s home was burned in the California fires. Apparently a lot of memorabilia was destroyed.

Thanks to GoComics’ dark side, I actually “got” today’s strip! And now that I understand, definitely a favorite.
I’ve been a paid member of GoComics for years, and one of the comics I subscribe to, and get e-mailed to me every day, is A&J. I assume the management has metrics showing which comics people are actually paying for.
? Way back in the 20th Century, when people had home pages, the syndicate had somebody whip up some tiny little 87×30 .gif files with comic strip graphics to link back to the GoComics site of its era. There was all sorts of legalese, “You can download this graphic ONLY if you link to this page with it and don’t use it for anything else.”
Anyway, my home page had the tiny little .gif file for Arlo & Janis.

I do enjoy the early Gene strips but my all time favorite of that time was the one where Arlo tries to explain to Gene how Civil Defense drills worked by hiding under the desk. Gene, who did not seem convinced that would help much asked Arlo if that was the same school where he learned everything else he knew!
Jimmy I think the little push pin is so you can “pin” it for future viewing and use. I will ask my younger house cleaning lady to explain pinning. She is into modern communication.
It’s poor site design on Gocomic’s part if they have both “like” and “favorite”. Most sites have one or the other and they mean pretty much the same thing.
Today’s strip reminds me that mbh has to have her piece of cake on the plate oriented just so or she won’t eat it. Guys, think about it this way-will you drink out of a beer bottle with the label facing away from you?

In defense of the old “duck and cover” drills, they actually made sense. Outside the blast zone, the most dangerous part of a nuclear explosion is projectiles (think of the piece of straw drilled into a tree from the wind of a hurricane). Anyone in the blast zone would be killed instantly but if you are alive to see the flash from the bomb, you have enough time to dodge under your desk and have some protection from the deadly projectiles. What to do in the days and months after the explosion is another, grimmer picture.

The ‘Favorites” pushpin will add the comic to your favorites page, found under “My Comics” at the top of the page.
Today’s ‘special silhouettes’ strip is actually a good one to keep – that could have so easily come from my house!
FYI, I will “favorite” any strip you put out there that is risqué… in case you want to pander!

Best part about today’s”s comic isn’t the back-lit nightie but Janis’ reaction- an eyeroll in panel 2 but a loving smirk in panels 3 and 4. I love how JJ presents their relationship.
