This one caused a lot of pondering. It simply is a reference to a line early in Gone with the Wind, when, in a discussion of the upcoming wedding of Ashley Wilkes and Melanie Hamilton, it is remarked, “The Wilkes always marry their cousins.” My old journalism professor P.C. Burnett, whom I have quoted here on more than one occasion, told us students that literary references were risky, because not all the readers will have been exposed to the reference. This would be an excellent example. I have not always done what my teachers told me.
