I’ve owned what seems like many gas grills over the years, but I’ve gone back to charcoal. I don’t think of myself as a neandertal purist on the subject, although I do think charcoal gets to the essence of why I bother to cook outside with the bugs and the heat in the first place. Having said that, I have friends who get great results with their gas grills, sometimes better than my charcoal-grilled meals. The convenience is undeniable, plus there’s always the admittedly remote possibility of an exciting propane event. However, most fire departments and I do not recommend those turkey-frying contraptions. Trust me on that one.
