A pithy comic strip about life, love, lust and puthy cats.

Comforts of Home

By Jimmy Johnson

I hope you had a good Thanksgiving. Well, we’re in it now. As addressed in the current A&J strips, the holiday season officially has begun. Anyone grumbling now simply is a curmudgeon, even if Thanksgiving did arrive a little early this year.

Today's "Arlo & Janis!"

So… how’s the weather where you are? Ours is finally typical of the season, with snow coming down to around 5,000 feet last Saturday and only rain mixed with snow down on the valley floor. Then things cleared for a couple of days… and are turning into a series of storms like that last one. It’s definitely time to take stock of our ice-melt supplies before the stores are raided. And to replace a worn-out snow shovel.

“even if Thanksgiving did arrive a little early this year. ”

My complaint is that “Black Friday” apparently now comes about two weeks before Thanksgiving, and continues through to the Sunday after… the ads magically all stopped talking about “black Friday” and started talking about Cyber Monday.

I refuse to buy anything from any store that starts talking about Christmas before Thanksgiving, or refers to ANYTHING as “a great gift”. I’m running out of places to shop. I must be badly outnumbered by people who WANT Christmas in October.

Scrooge: “If I could work my will, every idiot who goes about with ‘Merry Christmas’ on his lips should be boiled with his own pudding and buried with a stake of holly through his heart. He should!” Add between Halloween and Thanksgiving to get the proper timing.

1939 FDR got in trouble for making TG the 3rd Thursday (because the 4th was the last day
of the month – trying to help merchants) Back then Christmas Season started after
Thanksgiving – not in July as I have seen.

    Hey, Mark,

It is never officially the Holiday season until I do the Scrooge quote. Just something I have to do every year. Then things get really crazy.

In the last panel, Arlo is looking in the wrong direction after Janis did her part.

    Yes, we are.

To see how swinish we are, read “Men Are Pigs – It’s Our Birthright.”

It’s a very small book with superb humor.

After reading it, I was motivated to write several jokes of my own about our porcine behavior.

If there had been a 5th panel, Arlo probably would have been looking at Janis again.

Then there was Franco’s fifth column.

2d subject: A contribution from Grove UMC, Woodbury, MN.

When everyone at the table takes turns saying what they are thankful for, say, “I’m thankful I didn’t get caught,” and refuse to say anything more.

TG could not have been the last day (See what you get for believing the internet)
it has to be the antepenultimate day. (A Jeopardy question the other day)

So next year (2019) will be the latest possible day (Same as 1939) while this year is the earliest.

    🙂

Old Bear, now you know why my parents were married on Thanksgiving, but their anniversary never came on the holiday.

Thanks, I will check the local library. However in a small town of 12,000, I doubt it will be there.

    You’re welcome.

I’m not sure that it will be in any library, to tell the truth.

It’s not racy or inappropriate, but it’s a book of such little note that I can’t envision it in a library.

However, I found it for one dollar at this URL: https://www.biblio.com/9781575440224

Your library will do “Interlibrary Loans” especially if they are hooked to the county
    library system.

I have gotten books from 5 states away – and one I have on order now may be further.

Discussed with the MBH: that’s a strapless garment, and would have been easily removable w/o so much ado.

    Thanks for the reminder.

I used to be a frequent user of the loan system. I once had a book come in from Texas, and it was a fairly rare book about Frank Hamer.

I just asked for “Call Out The Flying Squad” – There seems to be about 5
copies in the country. (1 in the Library of Congress) Will see if anyone responds.
