A Roman priest named Valentine was beaten nearly to death with clubs and finished off with beheading on this date in 269, or thereabouts. That, children, is why we have Valentine’s Day! Well, that’s the short version. St. Valentine, if he existed and it’s believed he did, is the patron saint of lovers and beekeepers. Hence, the immortal greeting, “Honey, bee my Valentine!”
