Never Give Up

Never Give Up

October 17, 2007

I can say with certainty I have written and drawn more variations of this gag than any other. The only rival might be Janis’ neurotic insecurities in the couple’s early marriage, i.e., in the early years of the strip. Even then, the writing was more on a topic and did not always involve rewriting the same joke. And her insecurities eventually faded. Come to think of it, I don’t do as may “oblivious Arlo” jokes these days, but that’s only because there have been so many. Having said that, it is telling that these strips constitute part of the bedrock of Arlo & Janis. They’re popular, one of those “looking in our window” moments. Couples appreciate them. They show them to one another, smile at themselves and clip them or print them to display on the refrigerator. It’s hard to argue with that.

  1. They live between Allamuchy and Parsippany, not far from Hopatkong.
Oh, probably not, but I like to roll off those names.
Now to see if this escapes the censors-who-keep-posts….

  2. Ghost cannot understand my accent which my “dry mouth” syndrome has worsened. At least Janis doesn’t have to spell for Arlo.

Verbal spelling for phone can’t understand me either.

Wait till you lose a paper – search 20 minutes – and find it in your left hand.
In my defense there were a couple of other papers there also. 🙂

  4. In my case when my wife is talking, I am similar to an old “Far Side” cartoon: “May I be excused? My brain is full.”

I have literally told my wife several times that there is no way that I can remember everything she says.
