I promised you a little story. The first comic strip I tried to sell was about a small town populated by talking dogs. I called it (get ready) “Baskerville.” I thought it was pretty cute, although I really didn’t know beans about drawing a comic strip at that time. The syndicate editors to whom I submitted the work liked it, too. Almost every one replied with a personal letter instead of a form letter, and that’s always to be taken as an encouraging sign. However, they all said a version of the same thing: “We’re not interested in an animal strip.” A couple, including United Media, went further and asked, “Got anything about humans?” To make a short story shorter, I did sell a comic strip to UM, and now, if you’ll excuse me, I must go draw it.
