The first time I saw it, I thought it was a typo. You know, the kind made by those wet-behind-the-ears whippersnappers who fancy themselves reporters these days. It was in reference to The Open Championship, aka “The British Open” much to the annoyance of pedantic types such as Redman in the Big O. The players were “whingeing” about the depth of the grass in the rough. I thought, “They meant ‘whining.'” Then, I saw it again. And again. I looked it up, and sure enough: “whinge” is a word. It means, well, “to whine.” To use it in a sentence, “Redman will be whingeing all week about people who don’t use the proper name for that old golf tournament in the UK.”
