From where I sit, there’s a lot to talk about in the world of sports. The Atlanta Braves are back in the playoffs, for a few more hours at least, and my alma mater and venerable football factory Auburn University is undefeated and has leap-frogged that other team from that state in one or more of the countless football polls. I just can’t get excited about it. There is so much money and so much hypocrisy and so much unwarranted importance attached to spectator sports these days, that it’s impossible to experience pure enjoyment from them anymore, at least for me. I feel sullied, like I’m enabling something unhealthy—which I am. I don’t mean to begin the week on such a downer. I should be gleefully kicking the Tuscaloosa crowd while they’re down. Maybe I need to see a psychiatrist.
