The rental of movies on DVD wasn’t exactly a new thing when this strip ran in 2005, but I never claimed to be ahead of the curve. It was about this time, though, that videotapes disappeared from the rental stores altogether, and we all were being exposed to the “bonus” features. The nature of DVD technology made this practical, but most importantly it gave producers a way to repackage their old material for not much money. We could see, for example, scenes that had not been included in the original version of the movie and understand why. Today, so many of the rental stores themselves are gone. I can’t say I miss them all that much.
