I read somewhere (qualification being easier than documentation) that for only the second time in the history of collegiate and professional sports, different teams from the same state have risen to their respective championship for four years in a row. I’m talking, of course, about the University of Alabama’s three football championships in the past four years and the odd one that went to cross-state rival Auburn University, my alma mater. Supposedly, the only other time something like this has happened was when the Giants and the Dodgers still were playing baseball in New York, and the Yankees would let one of them win the World Series occasionally. I didn’t say it was a big deal, but it’s interesting, if true. Besides, if Alabama fans are waiting for congratulations from me, that’s as close as they’ll get.
