Well, the Japanese magnolia in my yard is a goner. The blossoms are, anyway. It happens every year. A few warm days in February, and the tree bursts forth with pink flowers, only to be killed by an inevitable freeze. It doesn’t seem to make much difference to the tree; as I said, it happens every year. However, where it looked glorious a couple of days ago, it’s now a wreck of withered brown petals. The bird feeder hangs in the Japanese magnolia. The birds don’t seem fazed, either. We carelessly refer to it as the “tulip poplar” sometimes, because the blossoms so resemble tulips, but it’s not.
