Today is All Saints Day, or All Hallows Day, or one of several other names. I always thought of this day as one on which the dearly departed in general are remembered, but it turns out there’s a lot more to it than that, at least in the strict interpretation. It started in the Catholic Church as a day to honor all deceased saints, known and unknown. I’m unclear on how one can be an “unknown” saint, but a lot of it is a bit unclear to me. I was thinking again of my father. You will remember, Halloween or “All Hallow’s Eve” was his birthday; as for today, he’s certainly among the dearly departed. However, if you have to be a saint to be honored, well, sorry Daddy.
