Since I do not post on Monday, this is my indirect homage to “National Dog Day,” Aug. 26. The original of this silly little Arlo & Janis belongs to a friend of mine who also is a great friend of cats. Speaking of silliness, if you’ve been wondering about Friday’s unusual post, what can I say? That business about the “protection racket” was a little self-serving promo I was playing around with a few months ago. I decided I would use it Friday, when I was in a bit of a hurry. I have some other odd bits stashed here and there, so be on your guard.

for those who didn’t catch it the first time around, you have to click on “Read all about it” located below Friday’s strip posted here to be taken to the “protection racket” post Jimmy is describing.
And it was well worth the read!
Thanks. I missed it. JJ: Youse didn’t tell me all about it!
Jimmy, I asked two of my fellow professors, “Do you teach students?” Then I showed this cat cartoon. Laughter out loud you gave them. Thank you!
Re 8-27-19 real-time cartoon: Technically, Arlo, the message on the bag should be “This Side Up”. It’s not “Open” until you open it.
But one end is sealed and the other is just pressed shut when it is rolled onto the tube. My problem is getting that theoretical open side to open up. Most times I can rub it between the palms of my hands and get it started, but some just refuse to cooperate. I really like today’s retro, Jimmy. Having had multiple cats in my life, I know the truth of the strip.
I was called for jury duty and showed up without my smart phone because the last time, 5-6 years ago, they were banned. As I looked around the waiting area, I saw nearly everyone on their phones. After about an hour, we got a break and I got my phone.
As I sat waiting, I realized that I had left my books at home. I also noticed that there were no magazines to read. It has been quite as a library in here as everyone is on their phone. The last time that I was called, they had local TV on. I am thankful that they don’t have them today.
This is probably my fifth time. Only served once. Another time I sat in a jury box and was the last day be they kicked out.
Update. Got called into the box and kept raising my hand when asked if I had been in a jury, been sued or had a close family member sued. I smiled and was sure that I would be dismissed….I wasn’t.
Told my fellow jurors not to worry, I’ve watched My Cousin Vinny at least 50 times! The defense’s opening statement was hilarious, if it wasn’t so sad. Hopefully it can be done tomorrow and we can leave for the Labor Day weekend.
A friend of mine reminded me of an old joke: “I have no faith in the American system of justice. How can you put your fate in the hands of 12 people who aren’t smart enough to get out of jury duty?”
My wife and oldest daughter both have made it to the jury pool a few times but never sat on a trial. The system’s totally left me alone.
I got called up last year. Went two days, sat around reading on my phone. Told at the end of the second day that I needn’t come back the rest of the week.
JJ-
re: the “Protection Racket”- I noticed that last week Mark Trail semi-promoted the on-line comic for its distributor. Coincidence, or are you secretly writing Mark Trail, too?
Love that cat (?) at the UR of panel 2!!
