Look but Don’t Touch

I’m not sure if this classic A&J from 1997 has run here before or not, but if it has it was a long time ago. (Where do you get the strange notion I should know these things?) I received word yesterday that the test batch of Arlo & Janis tee shirts has been printed. I haven’t seen them yet, but I will tomorrow. We’ll be tweaking the design as needed, and before you can say “I want one,” the final product will be in production. More on this soon.

A, follow the example of my next-door neighbor. She and husband both on disability but she dresses very well by visiting thrift stores and buying lightly worn outfits. Many are high-dollar store clothes going for less than $10. Plus the money she spends there goes to various charity or work-help programs so it’s a win-win. I also introduced her to the monthly flea market at a nearby state park and she had a ball haggling with the vendors there.

That is true, I love them. Once you get thin enough to wear just about anything you can make out like a bandit on clearance, closeout stores and thrift stores. I also love them for decorating.

Remember the multi thousand dollars 10 foot couch we hauled home for my dsughter? We paid $60 for it and rented a Uhaul for her. That couch may be 12 feet, it didn’t fit in trailer!

Used to call them my disposable wardrobe.

Many (if not most) people mistake fashion for style. The former you can buy; the latter you cannot.

Fortunately, I’ve always looked good in cheap clothes. πŸ™‚

Perhaps for females. My experience has been that, for males, items offered for sale and clearance tend to be either size XS or S, or size 2XL or 3XL. I am neither.

Ghost, as a 2xlt wearer, I can tell you that those sizes rarely appear anywhere on sale. So when I do find something, if it isn’t dog ugly I will pick it up. Considering the premium price charged for the larger size new, it is worth getting extra when you find it on sale. I have done well at yard sales sometimes.

Anonymous, with all the traveling you are doing, maybe you need to look at this site. http://www.scottevest.com/v3_store/subindex_womens_products.shtml

I found one of the men’s vests on sale on ebay last year and picked it up. It worked very well going through airports since I could just leave everything in the pockets and send it through the scanner.

Mark, the size issue may perhaps be because I do almost all of my shopping on-line. πŸ™‚

One recent exception: Three $39.99 fleece vests in XL from Cabela’s for $19.99 each, with free shipping. I love me some fleece. I have three fleece jackets (one Cabela’s, two TNF), but based on the past few winters, the vests are likely to be more practical, more often, for casual wear.

In fact, I love me some outer-garments, and I could probably fill a small closet with the ones I’ve collected over the years. And yet I live in a clime where sub-freezing temps are pretty rare.
Note to any Villagers of the female persuasion: If you have more than two dozen pairs of shoes in your closet, you should refrain from saying anything about that. πŸ™‚

Mark that is excellent suggestion. I am going to steel myself to not bring anymore steamer trunks along. My friends version is a bikini bottom, tee shirt, flip flops and toothbrush, passport and credit card.

If I packed my wardrobe in a jacket he would like that. So would I, flying is like a real.game of survival now. Literally.

Ghost I think you have already decided you and I are NOT compatible. Obviously shoes and clothes form a chasm of great depth.

Someone sent that beautiful lace jacket in a small, it might have fit when I was 5 years old. I have to call returns, no amount of dieting will get me there. If I can’t return it I will ask for volunteers.

Not judging, Anonie; just asking not to be judged. πŸ™‚

And speaking of trunks, did you ever see “Joe Verses The Volcano”? Loved those trunks and the scene in which he bought them.

Speaking of Siri reminds me of “The Big Bang Theory” and Raj’s infatuation with a Siri-like voice.

And that reminds me of the superb movie “Her,” which might have been inspired by TBBT.

I got lucky enough to find some of their clothes in my size at a yard sale and wore them out. I still have one fleece pullover that I use for a sleep shirt when it gets really cold. They’re pricey, but what I had was very high quality and it’s designed to travel well.

Mark, thanks for the answer. I still have “Surf City”, the first record album that I ever bought. I used to be great at video games, as long as it was Pong. I’m not exactly up to the minute on technology although I have a camera that doesn’t use film, I have an excellent cd collection, and about 250 songs on my Ipod. Re the weather, it has rained lightly all day, but the wind picked up about noon and has been steady at more than 35 mph since then. One of my favorite places these days is the library, which is a short drive down the highway and checking out dvd’s is free and they have a really big selection.

Another benefit of weight (and inches) loss…dug out my old* Hein Gericke riding jacket the other day, and it’s a comfortable fit again.

Jerry in FL, my favorite is “Asteroid”. And of course, pinball (real, not computer modeled). I mainly know of Siri because my ex is an Apple fanatic. What I know of tech is largely due to beginning to work with computers nearly 20 years ago and what I have learned by trial and error along the way.

What I love about the internet is it’s like having the world’s largest library where you have a chance of finding anything you are interested in. And things you never knew about turn out to be fascinating.

So true. Just tonight, the InterWebNet taught me about the Paraguay Expedition, the United States Naval mission of 1858 sent to redress the 1855 shelling of the USS Water Witch by a Paraguayan river fort. I must have been absent the day that was taught in history class.

I have altered Siri’s programming so that she now calls me “Your Exalted Majesty.” πŸ˜€

Recently, Apple upgraded her so that if you say, “Siri, what song is playing?” and let her listen to a piece of music, she is able to identify it… AND produce a picture of the album cover. She once identified an obscure piece of music AND noted it was being played by the City Of Prague Philharmonic to boot.

And tomorrow, Siri becomes a self-aware Terminator, out to wipe out the imperfect carbon-based life forms… especially any that commented uncharitably about her thighs. πŸ˜‰

Sorry Ghost I was being facetious, not critical. Of you, more making fun of myself and compulsive clothes and shone buying.

This is weird, I am sitting alone in Chili’s bar drinking ice tea and copiious lime to ward off scurvy while Monday night football blares over my head and two young males at next table had a sincere dinner long conversation about churches in accent not Okie. While drinking seemed odd but I suppose not?

I learned some years ago, while relief bar-tending, to never be surprised by anything I heard in a bar.

If there were a “Scurvy Awareness” t-shirt, I wonder what color it would be.

I ran into another one of those dumb 2-question surveys I had to answer before I could read an on-line Indianapolis Star article. I answered 1) that I had no interest whatsoever in photography and 2) that I had purchased more than $1000 of photographic equipment in the past 6 months. Neither is true, of course, but I hope someone finds that useful.
