I am of two minds about a new year. On one hand, it is an entirely arbitrary concept, for the first day of January is no different from any other day. It just so happens that in the system we have developed in the western world for keeping track of our solar progression, that particular day represents a starting place. You’ve got to start somewhere, right? For most of human history and in some cultures now, the day which we call January 1 doesn’t represent even that. On the other hand, I think a day to be reminded of time’s ephemeral nature is not a bad thing. To pause and reflect, to remember, to resolve to improve and do better: this is not wasted wool-gathering. If by some fantastic construct the Gregorian calendar had no annual renewal, I think it would be wise to invent a holiday devoted to the promise and the peril of the concept we call time. I suppose that’s exactly what we’ve done, and that’s my point.

….no way is this a cat, to quote Bugs Bunny: “if you’re not a rabbit, how come you have such long gears”?

$210 is pretty reasonable, unless the only thing that they did was sand and clean the thermocouple for the pilot light. But I thought you said that you didn’t have one? Anyway, the price could have been a lot worse. I had to get my oven working and it cost $365. The folks that owned the house said that they would “make good” for it, whatever that means. It’s a long story, but frankly my inspectors dropped the ball too.

Jackie’s kitty buffet
Jackie, obviously there is a lot of variability involved in getting things started. On my last “first date”, it only took an entrée and two beers at Buffalo Wild Wings to get a kiss in the parking lot and an invitation to her place for some “romance”. 🙂
GR6, lot has changed since 1995. 😉

Jackie & Debbe, I think you mean for your hints to be going to John in Richmond. I’m only actively dating my wife of 32 years, Elise. She might enjoy a trip to the beach, though. 😀
That must have been some hot sauce GR. OB, I didn’t realize that someone else has a Tippy. Our Tippy boy is the joy of my life. He has brought about a change in the personalities of the other cats. Elvis sometimes runs and plays with him, all 20 pounds of him (he’s a loong cat). Cilla is a combo big sister and adopted mother and if Tippy bites her ears too much she calms him down by laying on him. Spunky has become much less shy and now runs and plays like she did as a kitten. Debbe, your links get me in trouble. One always leads to another and all of a sudden it’s two hours later. Keep them coming though. JJ, you surprise us with your introspective side. Perhaps I sense the presence of a New Year’s resolution. Remember, we aren’t just fans. We’re also friends that you just haven’t met yet.
PS, thanks also Debbe because a word from you lets me know that I’m not just doing physical therapy with my fingers.
Debbe, $210 isn’t such a bad deal for heat. The furnace guy is on his way over here now, and hopefully it won’t take much to fix whatever the problem is.
Y’all speak of furnances. Was unaware that Americans produced small batch steel in their back yards.
My son-in-law and his crazy brothers are trying to talk their parents into letting them set up a furnace like this at their home in the country. They’re NOT doing it here in town.
