A pithy comic strip about life, love, lust and puthy cats.

Don’t Count on It

By Jimmy Johnson

July 11, 2000

We have a cat who jumps up in a spare chair at the dining room table and watches us eat. She doesn’t beg, and we don’t feed her at the table, as Arlo is doing above. (I would, but I dasn’t!) She just likes to be included, I think. However, when I eat sitting in my easy chair in front of the TV, all bets are off, and anything is fair game.

We have a cat that does a somersault when we ask him if he wants “Fancy Feast” (we changed to a healthier brand years ago, he doesn’t know the difference). He is older and I will certainly miss that when he is gone.

Dasn’t! Haven’t seen that one in a long time. And spell check keeps wanting me to correct it.

Skipper likes to share a few things like cheese, bacon or chicken, ham. The Garfields will eat almost anything like whom they are named for.

Leo likes bits of meat or cheese, and will even eat French Fries, as long as they’re fresh and hot. Once they’ve cooled down he loses interest in them. No bits of onion ring, however because onions are bad for a cat’s or dog’s digestion.

My most recent feline unit wanted some of whatever it was that I had, whether *I* thought it was something a cat would be interested in, or not. She trusted me to pick out only things that she would like. I like frozen lasagna because all I have to do is heat it up in the microwave. Well, kitty liked to eat the leftover bit that was still stuck to the “pan” when I was done, so I’d put it down for her, and she’d eat all the tomato sauce that was left after I finished eating the good bits. That cat passed to the great mousing field in the sky early this month.

Folks had a Dalmatian that sat on chair and watched them eat –
    no feeding though.

Or if not a known experiment, if Arlo should sail his boat through a strange cloud (Thank you, Richard Matheson).

Probably a malware site. Best to stay away from it.

Arlo, newspapers sent the printed comic strips through a weird shrinking cloud a long time ago.

Today’s strip, Jy 28th: In the last panel is a) Arlo stealing a kiss from Janis’ proffered lips of the previous panel? or, b) is Janis desperately trying to hold up a fainting Arlo via the serving window?

My first impulse was (b), but then I saw the possibility of (a) and I hope (a) is it. What say ye?

59th WA is upon us! With the prevalent virus, I would not have bet on us both being here a year ago.

      I’m fairly certain it’s a), but the way Arlo’s been moping around b) is a possibility I hadn’t considered.

Seeing the word “dasn’t” made me smile. Reminded me of my dad, who used the word “daresn’t” quite often. I suppose living in Pennsylvania accounts for the difference. But the thought is the same.

I once had a kitten whose response to “I see you have food and I want it” was to climb up and get it. Not amusing in the warmer months when one is not wearing long pants to protect one’s legs nor long-sleeved shirt to protect one’s arms, so we had to teach that kitty to stay on the floor and wait to enjoy leftovers. (and also that she had to wait for it to be left over.) Over the span of several cats, I’ve had fairly good success teaching them to wait for human food to become cat food by consistently not giving them anything while I am still eating, and then leaving the cat’s portion on the floor. The cat is not as efficient a dishwasher as the dog… the dog could be consistently expected with consume anything edible left on a plate. Then again, I also could count on the cat to stay out of the garbage can in the kitchen, which can’t be said for the dog. Now, I don’t have any cats nor dogs, so I don’t have to save anything for them any more.

Wednesday Update: The post-op game plan for Jackie’s knee replacement on Monday afternoon was for her to be discharged to home today. However, she suffered some “minor” (easy for me to say…she was the one who suffered them!) aftereffects last night (Tuesday) and into today. Happily, when I left this afternoon, she had markedly improved, and if that trend continues as expected, she will be discharged tomorrow (Thursday).
It’s been a crazy week, but I think I kept the chronology correct.

Thursday update: Jackie continues to improve, slowly but steadily. Therapy is working to make up for the lost time in getting her more mobile. No decision yet on whether or not she’ll be discharged today. She’s anxious to get home but realizes nothing will be gained by leaving the hospital too soon.

Does Jackie have a Brunhilda or a nurse Ratched?
    .
Several of my friends had a Brunhilda twisting their knee after replacement,
they wanted to strangle her at the time, but were glad in the long run that they got their
    mobility.
My FIL did not participate so ended using a walker & wheel chair.

Are those interminable “bending machines” for knees still used? I hated them with a passion, but retained knee mobility quite easily. Don’t believe any twisting was involved, nor can I see any reason for same. Of course, I’m speaking of 10-13 years ago [when patients stayed in the hospital longer].

Had some severe weather early this morning, say, 2 or 3 a.m. Some damage in N. IL and S. WI, but not right here – for which I am very grateful. No doubt, other Villagers experienced that storm, too. Hope those affected adversely can pick up and carry on.
