This old A&J Sunday is from 1992, when Gene was short and the hair was long. OK, so it’s not baseball season, but speaking of sports: I know there was a lot of groaning and eye-rolling Sunday afternoon when the New England Patriots executed one of their patented fourth-quarter comebacks to defeat the Jacksonville Jaguars. Really, you could not call it a “comeback.” When the AFC divisional playoff game entered the final 15 minutes with the Patriots trailing “only” by 10 points, everyone—and I mean everyone—knew what was coming. And sure enough, it came. The groaning and eye-rolling, of course, come from outside New England and from the fact the Patriots have been in, like, every Super Bowl there ever was. I believe that’s a record. However, now that they’re there again, I must say I’m rooting for them. Boston and New England have been very, very good to this ol’ southern-born cartoonist over the years, and I can’t help but be happy for them. Now, the University of Alabama is a different matter.

Bless you, Jimmy! I grew up in Jacksonville, and was proud of how well the Jags played to get to where they were. But I’ve been living in Maine over 40 years now, and we love our Patriots. So nice to know there’s at least one person outside of New England who doesn’t hate us.
At my high school band reunions (I’ve never gone to the regular HS reunions) they retired the “traveled farthest to get here” award because of me having moved to Utah from Memphis. No one else fell in love with mountains or would put up with snow.

Back in the 70s I spent two years in Sioux Falls South Dakota. That corner of the state is flat and rather boring, and there are only two seasons-above 99f and below 0. I came home to Georgia as soon as I could.
Needless to say, Go Pats! Maine newspapers have been carrying A & J forever!
We are Patriots fans currently vacationing at Fort Myers Beach. (Red Sox’s spring training camp is close by, but that’s another story). Let’s face it, Patriots fans can be pretty obnoxious. As visitors to the Jaguars home state, we tried to keep our cheering respectfully low key. But now, Go Pats!

You have a lot of fans in the Detroit area, Jimmy….We only host a couple of Super Bowls. We don’t play in them.
Good for you on the books, Jackie. I’ve done that a lot of times over the years. As you say: 1. It’s hard work and tiring. 2. It makes a terrible mess in progress. 3. It takes a long time. But the main reason for #3, at least for me, is that I can’t resist reading bits along the way!!
Donating old books can feel like giving away old friends. I find myself wanting to reread the best ones at least one more time…
Local private school is having a huge used book sale here Feb. 24th. They take donations all year, then set up tables in the school gym. The books are arranged by category and it only costs $1 to get in if you are 18 or older. I’m In!
Anyone know which current printer/scanner/copier is most reliable? I am seeing highly conflicting reports from Amazon, google, and Consumer Reports. Just brought home a new one, but then found the negativity on Amazon & google – after I had decided from the positivity found in CR!! What is a non-techie to believe?
Recently deceased is an HP6520, which was fine until it began to skip many lines of black on any given page. New ink, cleaning the heads, and cleaning the electrical contacts did nothing to help.
PS: new one is still taped into its box, so ought to be returnable.
I have a Brother that is about 4 years old and still going strong. Less expensive than HP, more durable than Epson, easy to change ink cartridges and they don’t force you to buy their own refills like the others. Mine is a combo scanner/printer that will connect wirelessly to your computer, and I have found that to be a huge convenience too.

My old HP was doing well, but my kids wanted something to give me for a Christmas gift in 2016 and they got me a wireless printer that I can print from my laptop and my smart phone.
We honestly do not print much anymore and I often use the scanner at work for bigger jobs. But the home one does come in handy. I’m not sure what to believe on the comments about any product, especially electronics.
Most name brands are good, especially if you do not get the very cheapest or the most sophisticated (more things to go wrong) pricey items.

I have an HP deskjet pro 8610 and am happy with it. I didn’t intend to get an all-in-one, but now I’m glad I did. And the wireless is very handy. Prints well whether it is photo (with or without photo paper) or documents or labels. I do not use the ink-on-demand deal that I’ve seen advertised for some models. But I do get emails from HP about specials, including ink deals. AND free next day shipping.

Not donating magazines just books. Misti is doing the thing where you put a ribbon wrapped book on a bench with a note to take it to read.
But there are some big and expensive ones that would be good to donate to Casio like wine books.

Jimmy, the retro at the top here made my heart skip. It is from my favorite period in your comic. That does not mean it is better than today, but today’s rich texture comes from the broad background you gave us over the years. Also, like a madeleine, the sight of your old style immediately reminded me of that time in my own life, fondly. I think that is what caused the reaction.
Then coupled with your current daily, really provided a comfortable… well ‘bookend’ isn’t the right word, because there are still books to be writ and added. But certainly it gives a nice ‘there we were, and here we are’ feeling of contentment. Thanks for the works you give us.
cx-p, for a brand recommendation, I’m split. On one hand, I am continually frustrated with my HP products, an inexpensive all in one that does most of the output, and a ‘photo ready’ from back when you needed to pay more for that level of quality. So I have always kept an eye on Brother products, I find them to be very promising. But that other hand notices that while I am looking at Brother for like 3 years now, I have to admit the HP units are still doing the little work I ask of them.
That is the other aspect of use. Now that I do not use printers frequently, I have been told my frustrations may be caused by the nature of ink-jet versus ‘laser’ toner. That is is the infrequent use that allows for problems to develop from dried out ink problems. It is suggested that laser printers are now also inexpensive.
Have not made the change yet myself, but wanted to point out the option.
And the New York Yankees are gonna win again too, so why play 162 games ? Just give ’em the World Series trophy now – THAT will speed up Pace of Play.
