I’m not sure if this classic A&J from 1997 has run here before or not, but if it has it was a long time ago. (Where do you get the strange notion I should know these things?) I received word yesterday that the test batch of Arlo & Janis tee shirts has been printed. I haven’t seen them yet, but I will tomorrow. We’ll be tweaking the design as needed, and before you can say “I want one,” the final product will be in production. More on this soon.

I believe the above cartoon has run here before, based on the facts I remember seeing it, and my local paper did not carry your cartoon in 1997, so I had not yet discovered the Goodness Which is Arlo & Janis™ then.
I could see the t-shirts now. Arlo with a headset and microphone next to Janis saying “Testing, 1,2,3,4”
The local doesn’t carry A & J or much of anything else so I depend on personal delivery. One advantage is that it’s in color everyday.
I’ll go with Arlo leaning on the red Cobra.

It also occurred to me I just hired two hardworking twenty years olds who can probably teach me to use my electronic toys. But first we get house and yard cleaned.
About weight, I have accepted that my body is like the market, stock, don’t panic and keep conservatively proceeding. Although I didn’t like seeing Black Rock, which I own a lot of was the fifth biggest loser in the Walmart disaster.
Am I the only one who noticed Walmart stock dropped billions in a single day after their earnings report was so bad last week?
By the way, better inspiration for me is going to Walmart and opening my eyes or going to my local Chinese buffet. I am always now the smallest person in either place and I say to myself “That is what you became, what you were and what you are no longer and you are NOT going back.”
It works. At my fitness center are healthier people, in Tulsa at P.F. Change or Cheesecake Factory are healthier people and they have skinny menus to choose from and I do. I surround myself with positive people and know my menus when I ear out. I no longer hesitate to ask they change things for me.
And I exercise some daily. Muscle indeed is heavier.
Certain whatever design is on the shirts they’ll sell like hot cakes.
Will our lovely couple be postboned?

America’s Test Kitchen found the canned pumpkin is just as good as scooping it yourself.
Because of the water content I (their suggestion) spread it on several layers of paper
towel and covers with several more. That dries it so it just peels right off and batter is not too wet.
The artificial sweeteners in diet soda/pop/tonic/cola/coke/sodapop send wrong messages to body so might actually inhibit weight loss.

When I lived in a cooler clime (northern OK) I made a pumpkin pie out of jack-o-lantern cut outs, but found that type of pumpkin much, much blander than the canned variety. This was before I married, and spouse does not like pumpkin, so I doubt I will ever try the “pie pumpkins”. Besides, he feels (and I agree) that pecan pie is the most excellent vehicle for ice cream. I have a great recipe (titled LBJ’s favorite) from the Texas cookbook by Mary Faulk Koock: 1 stick (1/2 c) butter or margarine, softened; 1 c sugar; 1 c dark corn syrup; 1/2 tsp salt; 1 1/2 – 2 tsp vanilla; 3 eggs; 2 c coarsely chopped pecans. With sturdy spoon or sturdy hand-rotary egg-beater, mix all but pecans together well, then fold in pecans, then pour into an unbaked pieshell. Bake at 350 degrees on a top rack until top is toasted brown and filling is set in the middle when gently shaken – about 40 to 50 minutes. If top begins to brown too early, tent with aluminum foil. Pastry edge should be browned and bottom pastry a pale gold. Cool slightly (if you can wait!) before cutting. Bluebell Homemade Vanilla is an excellent accompaniment. I will be taking to Thanksgiving at my daughter’s house in Louisiana.

Judy, where did you live in Oklahoma and where is daughter in Louisiana? Being from all three places including Texas pecan pie is the absolute best.. But I don’t put ice cream on any pie.
I do like the Jack Daniel’s pecan pie recipe. I don’t drink but alcohol improves many recipes.
I agree that people with a positive attitude are the ones to cultivate.
Recently a friend who is going through a rough patch posted on Facebook: Good hearted people get taken advantage of. You give too much. You trust too much. You love too much. You get hurt too much.

Probably mentioned earlier that wife made scratch ‘pumpkin’ pie from winter squash, which we found more flavorful than the pie pumpkins that we harvested from our garden back in the ’60s-’00s. Always, of course, with her signature oil crust.
Best vehicle for [vanilla] ice cream? Her signature rhubarb pie, same crust but of course also w/ a top crust. Secret of her r.pie flavor: use only 2/3 the sugar from the recipe. I don’t eat much pie [store-bought], mostly / high fat content.
When I last checked, OF prediction was for after 3 pm, today’s date. Probably a typo.

Jackie – I lived in Ponca City OK, my daughter and her family are in Mandeville LA (north of Lake Pontchartrain and New Orleans) and my son and his family are in Harahan LA (west side of New Orleans). They are about a 45 minute drive apart, which means when we go visit we get to play with all the grandchildren. Fun! I will have to look up the Jack Daniel’s recipe. Sounds good.

Sam Walton famously said, when asked about the more than a billion dollars he lost in the stock market due to Black Monday in 1987 (back when a billion was real money), “It was paper when we started out, and it’s paper afterwards.” Easy for him to say, of course, because of what he still had on paper afterwards. 🙂
Love rhubarb and used to make jelly and strawberry rhubarb jam too. Not easy to come by in Houston, TX. I keep planting it in Oklahoma which it supposedly likes but it has not thrived. I will try again.

In memory of Chef Paul Prudhomme I have two small catfish filets defrosting for dinner and I will blacken them, recipe on back of the catfish package. Will open windows and turn on exhaust fans! Sautéed green beans and fresh peppers from garden, lots of goodies out in garden including squash.
Had a honey crisps apple and aged artisan cheddar with fresh garlic from New York, no orange dye. Blew it with the Diet Coke!
I’ve probably posted this previously, but it’s one of my favorite seasonal recipes, and one given to me by my sister. I call it “the pumpkin dish for people who don’t like pumpkin”, as with the other ingredients and seasonings it really does not have a pumpkiny taste.
Pumpkin Bisque
4 Tbsp (½ stick) butter or margarine
1 cup finely chopped sweet onion
½ tsp ground dried sage
½ tsp turmeric
¼ tsp salt
¼ tsp ground black pepper
1 Tbsp cider vinegar
1 (15-oz.) can solid-packed pumpkin puree
5 cups low-fat chicken broth
½ cup heavy cream
½ cup thinly sliced green onion
Melt butter over medium heat in a large Dutch oven or heavy saucepan. Add chopped onion and cook until golden brown, stirring occasionally. Stir in sage, turmeric, salt, pepper and vinegar; cook for 1 minute. Stir in pumpkin and add broth; bring to a slow boil. Reduce heat and simmer (uncovered) for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Stir in cream and green onion. Adjust seasoning to taste with additional salt and pepper, if desired. Continue to simmer bisque for an additional 5 minutes over moderate heat. Serve warm. Yields 4 generous servings or serves 6 as a first course.
Recipe Note: Bisque is best if prepared ahead (1 to 2 days before serving). Cool completely, uncovered, then refrigerate in a covered container. Warm gently over moderate heat before serving. Freezes beautifully.
In a couple of weeks, I’ll have some frozen 1-cup servings in my freezer, ready for the holidays. But now, I’m hungry.
Anony, Cabot brand cheddar is excellent, and they have low-fat and uncolored varieties. But most cheddar is orange due to beta carotene used for coloring, not artificial dye. So if you eat carrots, go ahead and eat the colored cheddar too.
Judy in Conroe, if you plan on Blue Bell with that pie, you better buy it in Birmingham as you pass through. There are only about 3 counties in Alabama that have it, plus Texas and Oklahoma. Plants not up to full production yet and only selling in limited areas.

Blue Bunny ice cream is good, too. At least that’s what my Mom says. Not much of fan of ice cream in recent years.
I’ve always thought that stock market traders are like whitetail deer…one of them thinks that just maybe perhaps it heard what could have been a noise way over there somewhere, it flicks its tail, and the entire heart stampedes.
BTW, I saw one of those TV commercials last night in which William Devane is flogging gold, and he says something to the effect that good Americans vote, and they buy gold. Who knew? And I guess that makes me a not-good American.

I’m posting this as being of possible interest to sandcastler™ and other paratroopers, sport jumpers, and .mil geeks like me. Otherwise, one may utilize the Down Arrow key on one’s keyboard for its intended purpose if so desired. I noted with interest that, even in this day of near si-fi-realm electronic navigational devices, one of the air crew in the cockpit on the video is using what is obviously a folded aeronautical navigation sectional chart like the one I mentioned recently.
