It was 10 years ago this week that this WordPress blog premiered. I can’t believe it. And in those 10 years, nothing has changed! Same colors. Same artwork. Same format. It vividly was brought home to me how overdue we are for a bit of a shake-up around here. If you’re comfortable here and this kind of talk makes you nervous, I wouldn’t get very upset. That first blog entry 10 years ago rambled on and on about all the improvements I’d be making to the new Web site. Sheesh.

Aw, shucks, Jimmy, I went and read it; and all you said really was that you’d write some comments and we could post something. Simple and nice and apt! I don’t hate that picture.
From that first posting, ” I believe it really is capable of bringing together a geographically disparate group of people and giving them a sense of “community.”
Seems like it has been pretty effective to me. Congratulations– many things on the Internet don’t work nearly as well.
The more things change, the more they stay the same. Just don’t change because you think you should, but because something really needs it, please?
The ironic thing about that blizzard is that I bought the stuff for everyone else, but nothing for me as I really don’t enjoy drinking.
I have been called for jury duty quite a few times. Served on one and nearly had to serve on a murder trial. I made it clear that I had distinctly remembered the new media accounts of it. Usually sit and wait while the parties settle. We play a role as the threat of a jury trial forces it.
Yes it has been 10 years. I remember the early blog where we could not comment. This is nice.
Today’s Calvin is insightful. As a short-tempered “adult”, I was better behaved toward our kids during the school year if we had room-and-board girls than I was in the summer. Personal guilt trip. Grateful that Elaine could get past that.

a few things have changed; I have that picture of A & J (and the car) on a t-shirt, I have some of the cartoons you’ve posted in a very nice hardcover collection, and I’ve been able to support some good community work which put a JJ original in a frame on my wall. It’s been a good ten years for the strip, and I’ve very much enjoyed this site. Many thanks for all the fun.
Happy anniversary! The strip hasn’t ever given you enough room to put your wit and insight out into the world, and that alone would be reason enough to blog.
Nothing’s better than a perfectly functional website that one keeps talking about redesigning just for the sake of a redesign but never actually gets around to it. 😉
Jimmy you might consider REALLY getting involved and running a large Facebook and Twitter, etc. Groups can consume a LOT of time and effort that do not payoff in earnings per hour spent on them if you have nothing to sell.
If you can sell books, designs, art work, tee shirts, stuffed animals, coffee mugs, get speaking engagements then the efforts put into internet groups can be lucrative. This may not be your goal?
As one who has done this somewhat professionally I would advise asking yourself what you want to accomplish with your blog or website or other public contacts.
You may already be accomplishing your aim.

I was once asked if I was in favor of capital punishment. I offered to throw the switch. I was excused.
A usual out is if you have ever sued or been sued. Another if you or family member been a victim of crime which can range from robbery to murder.
Even things as common as being in car accident or causing one can get you out because questioning depends on type of case.
Juries are not one size fits all. They seek to empanel those that will be sympathetic to their case, pro or con.

Mentioned I bought all of Rheta/Janis books to resd. There are actually quite a few and I am enjoying them a great deal in truth.because they give such insight into her personality along with Jimmy/Arlo. Jimmy and Rheta continue to be friends.
Jimmy there is frequent mention of your shyness, fact you hated having to sell (.ie advettising), had trouble with deadlines. I say this not in critical way because none of this is easy for artists or creative people, common issues.
Which is why I asked what you wanted to achieve by changing your blog or website. I love your writing, you are best headline writer I have read. Your meandering thoughts tell me where Arlo’s comments come from, an inquisitive mind that never stops.
Rheta says you are as big a nut as Arlo but you read the book, right?

To capitalize on what Ms. Monies so well wrote, just above, it is very difficult to write a good comic strip. It has to be quite compact, and I did not know that till I sort of tried it out. Gasoline Alley—well, take any good f’r instance. And it also has to be, not poetic exactly, but not exactly prosy. It has to flow. I adore getting to know Percy Crosby’s Skippy at long last. (Thank you, GoComics!) Crosby had that immense skill too.
Jimmy Johnson too has those chops to condense and make it flow–and be witty. I sometimes try to think of a headline (is that what you meant, J. M.?) for each of the strips you post here, and man, it’s so hard to be at all good. Perhaps good rock ‘n’ roll lyrics are like that too.
But promotion? Now, I really am not much good at that. Different chops needed. But I manage in my job.
I still wanna know how much Kitty from Polly and Her Pals contributed to Ludwig’s look.
A tourist in Vienna is going through a graveyard and all of a sudden he hears music. No one is around, so he starts searching for the source. He finally locates the origin and finds it is coming from a grave with a headstone that reads, “Ludwig van Beethoven, 1770- 1827.”
Then he realizes that the music is Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and it is being played backward! Puzzled, he leaves the graveyard and persuades a friend to return with him. By the time they arrive back at the grave, the music has changed. This time it is the Seventh Symphony, but like the previous piece, it is being played backwards.
Curious, the men agree to consult a music scholar. When they return with the expert, the Fifth Symphony is playing, again backwards. The expert notices that the symphonies are being played in the reverse order in which they were composed, the 9th, then the 7th, then the 5th.
By the next day the word has spread, and a crowd has gathered around the grave. They are all listening to the Second Symphony being played backward. Just then the graveyard’s caretaker ambles up to the group. Someone in the group asks him if he has an explanation for the music.
“I would have thought it was obvious,” the caretaker says. “He’s decomposing.”
Shame on you, baby! That is awful!
