In case you haven’t noticed, there’s a new Nancy in town. You remember Nancy, don’t you? Of course you do. It’s being drawn by a young talent named Olivia Jaimes. She is attempting to take Ernie Bushmiller’s iconic creation back to its roots, and I think she’s doing it. Her style is quite different from the previous artists on Nancy, and, the Internet being the Internet, she’s gotten kicked around by a lot of commenters in her first few days. I think she has weathered that storm and is going to do well. Give Nancy a look, and while you’re at it you might research Ernie Bushmiller and the origins of the venerable feature. There’s probably a lot more to it than you’d come to believe.

Nancy started out as Fritzi Ritz, and come to think of it, she appeared in her underwear a lot back in the Jazz Age, kind of like Janis is doing here.
I’m trying to give the new cartoonist a chance. I wonder if she’s choosing the colors or leaving it to someone at Comics.com to do it for her?
Love the level of humour. The very young wouldn’t get it.

BTW, does Olivia Jaimes have a website? I can’t find one, which is odd these days!
Was never a “Nancy” fan; all I can tell is the drawing style is different. OTH, “Thaves’s” seems much like the original, both drawing style and content. If I remember, the Bumpsteads look much the same also. Dick Tracy doesn’t, but again, I’m no fan, wasn’t even as a kid. “L’il Abner” isn’t as good a comic as it was. JJ has them all beat.

emb, L’il Abner hasn’t had a new strip since Al Capp retired in 1977. Capp said at the time that one reason he was retiring was he just couldn’t do the quality work he once did. But boy, I sure miss that strip. And no, Tracy doesn’t look the same, but it does look better than it has with some of the artists since Gould retired.
And Arlo is right, that was a dumb question.
I really enjoyed the “new” Nancy strip. The drawing looks similar but the subject matter is funny. Most of what I remember of the original Nancy wasn’t that funny. I especially like the strip where the teacher chews out Nancy for spending her spring break sitting around playing video games and watching TV. The next panel says “Two Days Earlier” and it is of the teaching sitting and watching TV.
Very much of a modern twist.
I remember noticing at least two distinct styles of “Nancy” in my newspaper back in the day.

It must be the Jerry Scott to Guy and Brad Gilchrist transfer that I’m remembering.
In the ’30s-’40s there were 2 competing “German” strips, “The Katzenjammer kids” and “The Captain and the kids.” TKK still exists. Cannot remember which NYC paper featured which. Not TNYT, of course. One or both were also in comic books.

I’m currently reading How to Read Nancy – an exhaustive analysis of one three-panel strip from 1959. Who knew that Nancy and Ernie Bushmiller had such hidden depths! If you’re a comics nerd [fan? aficionado?] I recommend it. As regards the “new” Nancy – I like the look of the characters (other than the curious color tint) and I think things are off to a pretty good start. It’ll be interesting to see if the fact that the artist is a woman will make any noticeable difference in the tone of the strip.

The skin tone looks fine on last Sunday’s strip, but the weekday one look yellow.
Ken from Framingham: “Olivia Jaimes” is a pseudonym. I believe it is known that she is an established web cartoonist, and there has been speculation that some of her web content may not be considered suitable for the Nancy audience (and hence the anonymity) – but AFAIK no evidence has been presented.

Nancy is one tough strip to tackle! Mr. Bushmiller made it so extremely exacting. Surgically!

Offhand—and I’m sure not in the profession—I’m not sure I could think of one other cartoonist who could do it precisely as Ernie Bushmiller did. That extraordinary tightness of design. And of writing.
Now, a new version of Nancy, that’s a different fish—
I surpass 88 in: months, weeks, days, hours, minutes, seconds, pounds, kilograms, centimeters of height & of circumference, cubic inches, cubic centimeters, and any sub-multiples thereof. However, I defer to others when it comes to years.
I’m a young buck who turned 65 today. And won’t be retiring any time soon. Too much work to do, too much life to live, too little money to slack off.
