(Cartoonist’s note: Continuing today with the next three installments of “Lost Key,” complete with original commentary. Should have stayed lost! This stuff is awful. If thought it was very clever at the time I drew it.)
Enter Davey. Davey was to be a central player. Davey. Get it? As in “Davey Jones’ Locker.” Looking back, I have the same trouble with Davey that I have with the character Linguini in the otherwise excellent animated film Ratatouille. Both Davey and Linguini are such doofuses (doofusi?) that it’s difficult to sympathize with them. They even look a lot alike, don’t they?
Yes, I misspelled Mr. Buffett’s surname. I blame my old friend Curtis for that. My first serious exposure to Jimmy Buffett’s music was from a collection of cassettes Curtis copied for me from his vinyl albums. In the process of labeling the cassettes, Curtis misspelled “Buffett,” and I went on to compound the error. Not only did I listen to Jimmy’s music without paying, I didn’t even spell his name right. I believe I subsequently have purchased enough legitimate Jimmy Buffett music and merchandise to atone.
Enter Konk. Could I have gotten more unimaginative with the names? It seemed horribly clever at the time. Konk was to be Davey’s mentor and boss, of some sort. I’m not sure what business Konk was in. I knew better than to ask.

You could have named him “Conch”, but then people would have mispronounced it and not gotten the joke.
Yeah those strips were uh different. But like today’s strip indicates, who likes doing the same thing over and over again.
Was Davey supposed to be left handed, or was it just the way that one panel came out?
Don’t be so hard on yourself JJ. I think Lost Key is kinda cute. Characters always need time to develop. I can see how this strip could have worked out. But still love my A&J.
9/11 lest we forget.
I feel the same way as the tourist regarding Buffett music. Once in a while is great, more often than that is annoying. I guess it’s because he usually sounds drunk. Not that I have anything against a good drunk, some of my best forgets were while drunk, but I don’t like my entertainers to sound like they’ve had one pitcher of Margarita’s too many.
I had the pleasure of hearing this woman sing in a small meeting room at our retired educators luncheon today – an amazing voice, a moving performance. an important message.

The old strip is fine! Set up is always hard. Sometimes I see the first episode of a great TV series, and am fascinated by all that needs to be established before it can get rolling. But you have me amused and looking forward to the next installment, and that’s the true test of all episodic fiction.
But the timing was not bad.
Jimmy:
You know cartooning better than I do, but I think Lost Key is pretty da*n good.
I think Lost Key is a lot better than you think it is. Don’t be hard on yourself. Every day in the paper there are a half-dozen strips with a lot less going for them.
BTW, the plural of “doofus” is “doofi”.
Nice punch line in the 3rd strip…reminded me of “Sparky”.
So…
The young man still wants a family, a nice house, and an important job.
Good for him.
Myself, I wish I had spent my life in Lost Key.
In the end, we all wind up occupying spaces that are the same size.
What Davy is missing is that family, home, and career IS experiencing life. Lots of people never get there…
