Ruth makes her appearance. Ruth was very intelligent with a passionate and romantic nature. Her grades were good enough to earn her a partial university scholarship, which she used to major in French. She eventually made it to Paris, working as a translator for a multi-national corporation. She is in a relationship with a handsome young French lawyer. She has a yellow Labrador retriever named “Gene.” I just made all that up, but I know some of you are going to ask, “What happened to Ruth?”

I think you need to flush out the “where’s Ruth” concept and run with it!
“I just made all that up”
Of course you did, silly! 😛
(I know you meant now as opposed to in the past but I couldn’t resist)

Awwww!! I had my own fantasies about what happened to Ruth…
I’ll run with those…
We all have fantasies Jimmy.
The thing is about being a Creator is that when Jimmy “makes it up” it instantly becomes “cartoon reality”. For instance, today he could have had Arlo and Janis reminiscing about how they loved that nude beach when they were first married and how they went there every chance they got.
Of course, that would have ruined the gag, but it would certainly have made for a very interesting Panel #1, visually.
Actually, that raises an interesting question; how much of a character arc do you have for semi regulars? Coming from journalism, I could see a perspective where you viewed characters as part of a story because they were there, and then left when that story ended. Other times, cartoonists have just responded to their audience and whole strips changed because some second banana took over – Nancy displaced Fritzi Ritz, Popeye took over Thimble Theater, Opus came to dominate Bloom County. From your comment, I would guess that Ruth and others in the Day’s family orbit experience life when you need them to, but you have a deft touch, so that’s all right too.
Yeah, but mine are about an able-bodied, healthy, bright, lovable 70+ woman who is willing to put up with me, likes to cook [and bake?], is willing to face the prospect of having to become my chauffer, and can handle MN winters. Univ. town and hospital where I volunteer 2 min. away. Doesn’t have to attend church w/ me.
Like to look at scantily or unclad young woman, but don’t want one. Looking license Elaine gave me has no expiration date.
The four eggs in this nest have been rearranged, so someone is around, but cannot tell from the whitish eggs if they’re hawks or geese.

Peace,
Chris, I think the second string come and go as needed to give Jimmy a chance to try something different. They add spice and variety without overpowering the regular direction of the strip. And you’re right about his touch. Like my grandmother’s cooking, he seems to know just how much of anything to add to make it good without overdoing it.
emb, Geese have moved in.
Fourth panel Ruth was sure flexible.

Peace,
I like Ruth as that was my mom’s name. Today would have been my mom and dad’s 71st wedding anniversary. That hardly seems possible.
Chris
JK Rowling claimed even minor characters had a backstory.
Dad liked Over Easy eggs – cooked one, then ate the yolk without
breaking it so it would be easier to clean the plate — It was not a good egg.

It still is their Anniversary – though the way you state it avoids a convoluted
explanation.
The 30th will be the 80th anniversary of my parents wedding, though they celebrated
63.
Your way is better.
My parents have both “Stepped On The Rainbow” –
Does that mean I am an Orphan?
Thank you Ghost & John II for the explanation for yesterday’s strip. I obviously did not catch the like/dislike irony but also suspected there might be a more “adult” marital interpretation. We will just leave that one alone.
emb, you reminded me of this quote:
“Women are like elephants to me. I like to look at them, but I wouldn’t want to own one.” — W. C. Fields.
Girls are simply wonderful. Just to stand on a corner and watch them going past is delightful. They don’t walk. At least not what we do when we walk. I don’t know how to describe it, but it’s much more complex and utterly delightful. They don’t move just their feet; everything moves and in different directions . . . and all of it graceful.
Robert A. Heinlein
I’ve heard on good authority that men don’t just move their feet either.
Peace,
Apparently, when one survives to my age, the women do the chasing. At least that’s what Jackie tells me…and also something about me having a local fan club.
