I said I would discuss an upcoming sale of A&J stuff, and so I shall. I am involved in a project, so involved, in fact, that I have lost a thumbnail and maybe chipped a bone in my hand. I’ll get into specifics of the project itself in coming days, but like most projects it will require more than blood, sweat and tears. I was going to contribute in my usual way, hit you up for money via an auction or sale of original art. Then, I began thinking: we’re well into the 21st Century. I thought I might try a Kickstarter campaign. Many of you will know what I’m talking about; those who don’t may go to kickstarter.com for a quick primer. I really don’t know a lot about it myself, but it will be a learning experience for us all. One advantage will be a range of A&J “rewards,” as they’re called, some much less expensive than others. I hope it will be fun. Stay tuned.

Dutch painter, must have come here to do it. Rattlesnakes are strictly New World. Likely most of you knew that.
Peace,
I’ll repost this from the previous thread:
joe d: That happen to me, but fortunately it was my wife’s fault. The kids were grossed out though.
Today’s strip is one that I would put on the refrigerator if I still bought a newspaper. However I did save it in my A&J file that I keep on my computer and posted it on Facebook. I love looking at the old strips when I am having a rough day. It makes me smile and even break out laughing, which really confuses folks around me who know how bad of a mood that I was in before I pull them out. Thank JJ.
“lost a thumbnail and maybe chipped a bone in my hand”
So, it’s going to be Arlo and Janis in stone sculpture?
Good Lord JJ!! What is it with my male friends and injuries these days? In the last month I’ve had one friend lose the tips of two fingers on his right hand and another the tip of a finger on his left hand. Both woodworking with power tools. Men and power tools! Haven’t you guys ever heard SAFETY FIRST?!?
Well, yeah, Jean, but…POWER TOOLS!
I’m not exactly sure what project Jimmy referenced, but he may need to ask himself if it’s worth risking the tools of his trade…his hands, I mean.
Hey, Power Tools. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZDWEd7kjS4
Mark that one was FUNNY@ I am forwarding to my boating group. Talk about power tool injuries, those guys have them. I keep pointing out to dentists, surgeons, veterinarians they need their fingers.
One of best columns I ever did was called Could You Get Off the Island? I posed question if shipwrecked and able to rescue yourself and five tools or things could you build an object that floated and get off?
Mind you, these were designers and boat builders that built boats all the time but with power tools, epoxy and screws. Take away the cords and batteries and ???????
kickstarter? cool! Of course, Geeks Doing Good got all my money for this week,,,,but if I start saving now I’ll have some for when yours takes off. 🙂 But yeah, take care of yourself!!!!!
Don’t forget keyboarders like me too! And musicians. Read an article the other day that Eric Clapton is suffering from peripheral neuropathy in his legs now and it is affecting his ability to tour.
I thought it was his fingers?
But hand and fingers are vital. My boat designer friend can no longer play an instrument due to having fingers reattached and nerve damage. These guys often injure themselves. And they must draw too.
I thought Habitat For Humanity?
Jackie, we stock up on these:

But don’t eat too many almonds… almonds are reportedly chock full of oxalates, the most important component of kidney stones.
Kickstarter takes a VERY large cut.
Yes, it’s a big platform. But I would not recommend it for people who already have an audience.
Perhaps GoFundMe or some other competitor would be better, as they take a small cut.
And I heard this from a third hand report so Mark can tell us if true, but it was that if you don’t make your goal you don’t get any money? A friend funded publishing his book this way and he was popular writer but not as well known as JJ. He worked his butt off for contributions, using everyone like me who had an audience to ask for help for him. He almost didn’t make it. I got an autographed book.
Heard from reputable source that another friend is trying this but not being successful and may get no money in end.
Direct from the Kickstarter FAQ page: Every project creator sets their project’s funding goal and deadline. If people like the project, they can pledge money to make it happen. If the project succeeds in reaching its funding goal, all backers’ credit cards are charged when time expires. If the project falls short, no one is charged. Funding on Kickstarter is all-or-nothing.
My interpretation: So no, if the goal is not met the creator gets nothing. But that is because no money is physically taken from anyone pledging if the project fails to achieve its goal. There is no money to distribute.
What are the fees?
If a project is successfully funded, Kickstarter applies a 5% fee to the funds collected. Our payments processor will also apply payment processing fees (roughly 3-5%). The complete fee breakdowns are available here.
If funding isn’t successful, there are no fees.
Me; 3-5 percent does not sound like a huge cut. And if no money is collected due to project not meeting goal, no fees charged at all.
Thank you Mark. That sounds reasonable to me. Far less than sending a floral wire order!
That was my friends statement, that no money would be paid for failing to reach goal.
You’re welcome Jackie.

Everyone do what you think best. Robert Ringer wrote a book “Looking Out For Number One.” I highly recommend it. As for me, I am a nosy person who will stop and ask you if you need help. You can tell me to kiss your /(*)\ and it won’t bother me. I’m rather glad that I have saved the lives of several people by not minding my own business. Second, if the lady couldn’t tell if the naked man was walking toward her or away from her maybe he wasn’t naked.
Or maybe she needs to have that talk with her mother.
She knew, just didn’t specify which way SHE was driving. I asked Glen my resident County deputy and he says it is fairly common occurrence out in rural area because they have a mental facility they get away from or that it could be drugs, they pick them up often.
I saw one last night driving home from gym which is 25 miles south of me. He was partially clothed in ripped up ragged clothes and barefoot. Walked like a marionette on strings and the puppeteer didn’t know how to operate.
I’ve not had a chance to read this yet, but am guessing you’d find it worthwhile.

Peace,
eMb’s article is available freely only to a select group of persons; pity.
Sorry. If I’d gone on to read it, I’d have found it was for Sigma Xi members [and maybe Amer. Sci. subscribers] only. Peace,
