Yesterday, July 29, 2015, marked 30 years of Arlo & Janis in newspapers. It’s an understatement to say the big anniversary bash was low key. Oh, months ago there were big plans, but the best laid plans of mice and men aft get knocked into a cocked hat. I confess to a certain ambivalence about the whole thing. To survive and thrive for 30 years in the newspaper syndication business is a rare accomplishment. Conversely, bragging about how long one has been around in the syndication business is tantamount to bragging about how lame and irrelevant one has become. That’s not always fair or true, but for some it is the consensus. I do want to say that I feel very privileged. I love what I do. Who wouldn’t? And I thank all of you who have made my livelihood possible over the years by reading Arlo & Janis and encouraging me. I consider it a personal favor, which I will return by drawing the best comic strip I can.

Old Bear,
LMAO at no refills.
Loved the release of the lizard today!
This old strip hits home
emb: To keep them guessing, I’d have replied, “You don’t have to believe something in order to teach others what you know about it.” I use that as a chaplain to keep patients from focusing in on my personal theology… we’re supposed to be talking about their spiritual beliefs and needs.
Just catching up
Congratulations on 30 years – let’s hope for 30 more even though I won’t be around for all of them!
TR:
That was one of the arrows in my quiver.
Peace, emb
Arlo could have had it much, much worse: it could have been a Feegle.
Just peeked in and there was Sideburns comment on wee men.
OK, now it’s Sideburns and Sandcastler peeking in my windows instead of Jimmy. I’m reading Wee Free Men right now.
How, great, it, is, to be, a, comma, and, separate, one, word, fromma, nother.
Dear Mr. Johnson:
Would it be possible to change your blog settings so that comment posting may continue for more than one week? Formally, that did not seem to be a problem. Some of the orphans are still crying over being locked out of the orphanage again.
Respectfully,

Miss Whistlewait,
I have a roomy retreat just outside the Village on Route 1. Name on mailbox, sandcastler retreat. The key is attached in a magnetic box inside back of aforementioned mailbox. It is stocked with: blankets, assorted flavors of Pop-Tarts, and a generous supply of powered drink mix. The shed out back has ample firewood, if need to heat arises. The privy is a freshly limed two-holer. Feel free to use it in the case of Village closure.
Mark in TTown,
🙂
Enjoyed your current comic today. Glad to see that you’re still pushing the envelope. I’m pretty sure *that* gag would not have passed the censors thirty years ago. What really got my attention, however, was the phrase “britches leg.” If there was any doubt that A&J was a Southern comic, today’s strip removes it.
Ghost, an Arlo and Janis Con would not even approach weird for most people. This, on the other hand: http://nbcnews.to/1E0CWnn
It really can be a lot of fun, though. I was involved for over 3 years and met a lot of great people.
sandcastler(tm) I just realized that verse didn’t scan right for Burma-Shave ™. But it’s an easy fix: How, great, it, is, to be, a, comma, mother, and, separate, one, word, fromma, nother.
So these little guys are burrowers! No wonder Arlo’s britches leg looked inviting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ziV3Z3BTHFE
When you are dissatisfied
and would like to go back to youth,
think of Algebra.
——————————-
One of the many things
no one tells you about aging
is that it is such a nice change
from being young.
to Old Bear, you’re right about the Algebra. But the second part of your comment, not so much. When I was young, I could run, and climb hills. I could kneel down on the ground and pull weeds, and look at flowers and moss. Now I can’t do any of those things.
If I’m having trouble going to sleep at night I think of algebra. x + y= no, that will keep me awake. They’re having a gas war locally if you remember that term. A new station opened this morning with a price of 1.99/gal. By the end of the day most of the other places dropped their prices from 2.50+ to 1.99 and by the end of the day some places were running out of gas as everyone filled their tanks. You would have thought that there was a hurricane headed our way.
Happy 30th anniversary A&J and kudos to Jimmy for making it happen.
GR6, I may attempt to upgrade a machine to Win10 this weekend.
Charlotte, As I walk out to get the newspaper in the morning, 5:30 thanks to Cilla, there is a slight rise to our driveway. I want to slow down, but I try to remember to speed up. Going and coming I try to open my eyes to the flowers, crepe myrtles, etc. You make a difference right here and I know that there is plenty you can do.
Debbe, I hope everything went as well as possible under the circumstances. Continued prayers and virtual hugs, hon.
Walking Playlist #9 – Yep, still thinking of the “jump” lady. Also, this was one of the songs used in the aerobics class I attended some years ago and brings black pleasant memories of my skimpily attired classmates. Have I mentioned they were all females? I believe that I have. (Of course, in shorts and a cut-off tee, I was fairly skimpily attired, myself.)
I don’t, however, remember any of them having quite as much hair as the members of this band.

Now, I recall my youth and my introduction to the world of algebra in a much more positive light! It was the start of my love for higher mathematics, and my awe-struck wonder at just what could be done therewith [no snide remarks needed!]. Many other parts of my youth were not nearly so pleasant.
Gary: I think I’ll update my ultrabook tomorrow, then my 17″ laptop if that goes OK.
