A pithy comic strip about life, love, lust and puthy cats.

Web Comic

By Jimmy Johnson

Remember when a Web page was an interesting thing unto itself? Well, that would have been about 10 years ago, when I drew this A&J strip. Actually, it would have been longer than that, because I’m usually at least three to five years behind the curve when it comes to popular culture. Incidentally, one of my regrets is not seriously studying language when I had the neurological pliability to do so effectively. I always hear that English is a Germanic language. That would be German in the third panel. Does it look like English to you? Well, aside from “falsch” for “wrong.” I earnestly have tried to learn Spanish and French in my later years and failed mostly. Nevertheless, I can say English also shares a lot with the Romance languages. As I said, I wish I’d studied linguistics. And as Arlo once told Gene about studying a foreign language, “At least you’d know you’d learned something.”

Jackie, if it really matters to you, go for it. If you don’t really feel like going, I’m sure you can find plenty to do at home. But whatever you do, enjoy it!

I really love the crazy boats and friends at the Everglades Challenge but I am pinched for time because the surgery and complications took away two months. I won’t be able to stay and go to Keys and probably would just have time to drive and return because I have to be in Corpus Christi by March 22 to build three boats. I need to look at calendar.

OK, I still travel by restaurants. I’d like to go back to Cotton in Monroe and Blue Dog in Lafayette and on to John Folses restaurant on East of Lake Pontchartrain, LA Provence and then hit some on Gulf Coast and see how recovery has been there since I was last there a few years ago. I had read things were improved.

Or I can stay home and garden. Half of front yard is safe from workmen stomping it. The restaurants will still be there.

Just got in and finished reading.

    Yay for the good news
Prayers for those that need them
“Keep up the good work” for the rest of us.

I guess I never thought of “he” as gender specific in certain context.
same as “youz guys” but there are people that need a cause.

There is a word that grates – persons when the speaker/writer/(the ubiquitous)they mean people.

I will stop here before I need chapters

This is weird! I tried to submit a comment about the crocheted picture, but the software rejected the url. Even if I removed the url for my website and my email address it did the same thing. Let’s see if this goes through!

Llee, the piece in question was made strictly from fine white thread. However, the pattern of full, empty and partially filled squares made a picture that looked like it was originally done in stained glass, including an arched frame, and enough filled in around the edges to make it a proper rectangle. It had been done during the preceding year, specifically for the fair and was a copy of a piece that she’d done years ago in pale green thread. Alas, we can’t display it because it was sold at the fair, and I don’t know any more what happened to the other one.

We do have a set of curtains she made in use, and at least one table cloth for Thanksgiving and so on (if we ever celebrated it at home, that is) but those things are kept (I think) in her old ceder chest, which is now our living-room coffee table for protection, both from time and cats.

OK, that got through, without the final paragraph:

And, while I’m thinking about it, the gender-specific nouns made me think of something odd about our two pets. In English, an unknown dog is always male, and a cat female. (That is, you use he for the dog and she for the cat.) In our case, both would be wrong. Marcia’s new dog is female and my cat, Gully, is male.

    Good morning Villagers…

Indy Mindy, that is so good to read that your Grandma is much better. Thanks for the update girl. Now, how is your job going?

Jackie, read Miss Charlotte’s post, and I am in total agreement with her. Think gardening and then Corpus Christi.

Jerry, yes we did get some snow…but it didn’t stick…hahahahaha!!!!

What’s that old song about they’re coming to take me away, haha, hoho, hehe?????

So, I went to bed at 7 last night…..I find this time of day to be serene, the madness in the house is asleep.

    Ya’ll have a blessed day.

Hello yal and no that is definitely never singular. Debbe, does he know that you call him that? And why are ship’s shes? And why are all cats grey in the dark and why ask why? Ghost, you are a brave man to bring up that subject. Let’s throw it against the wall and see what sticks. Did Jeb boy quit because of that last ad with the gun?

Jerry, y’all can be singular if you are speaking to one person; “y’all are just the sweetest thing!”. If you are speaking to more than one person it becomes “all y’all”, as in “All y’all come on. Supper’s ready.”

  14. Avatar

I agree with Trapper Jean, it is both singular and plural. Y’all yawls a bit in use. I know, Ghost, don’t quit my day job as my puns suck.

Debbe – “They’re coming to take me away” by Napoleon XIV Don’t know about work, haven’t been back yet. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Took the week off as I thought I would be coming back for a funeral – really, REALLY glad that didn’t happen.

    Y’all is singular.
    All y’all is plural
    Y’all’s is singular possessive.
    All y’alls’ is plural possessive.
